Donald Trump on Tuesday emerged victorious in his scorched-earth campaign against Hillary Clinton, the Republican establishment, and basic decorum, pulling off the most stunning upset in U.S. history.

For 17 months, the reality television showman mesmerized the public with his unvarnished tweets, constant television presence and raucous mass rallies. His full-throttle grip on the nation's imagination enriched the news media and eroded standards of political civility.

Clinton entered Tuesday with a small but sturdy lead in her second bid to become the first female president, and the loss to Trump is a devastating blow.

The billionaire launched his bid for the presidency with inflammatory remarks calling Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists and ended it by vowing to sue the dozen women who have accused him of sexual assault.

The United States now enters uncharted territory, with a president-elect who has precious little political experience and is deeply distrusted by a huge portion of the American public.

POLITICO publishes election results based on the calls of either the Associated Press or three major news networks.
