Dear Friends, To mark this year’s International Day of Peace, NDI released a six-part blog series <https://www.demworks.org/series/resilient-democracy> reflecting on our experience supporting democracy in conflict-affected countries. NDI has spent more than three decades helping its local partners build democracies that are resilient to violent conflict and which provide for the peaceful competition of interests and ideas. This form of politics resolves conflict through dialogue and deliberation, rather than the threat or use of violence. The posts in this series take a closer look at how NDI has worked to decrease intergroup tensions, promote democratic oversight of the security sector, mitigate the threat of electoral violence and support post-conflict political transitions. From Colombia to Kosovo and Cote d’Ivoire, these examples demonstrate that managing conflict through peaceful means is the foundation for democracy. As we continue exploring how NDI programs contribute to sustaining peaceful societies, we welcome your reactions, suggestions and reflections.
