Sunday - October 30, 2016 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements 9TH GRADE PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Events PBS FALL COFFEE GATHERING: NOV. 15 MS FALL PLAY: "THE CHILDREN'S STORY BOOK FAIR: NOV. 5 & 6 SCHOOL YEAR ABROAD INFO SESSION/RECEPTION: NOV. 16 PARENT COFFEE WITH QUAKER LIFE CLERKS: OCT. 31 SFS PARENT SPEAKER: TONY WOLF: NOV. 10 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, At Collection this week, thanks to the efforts of our student club CivilEyes, Upper School students had the chance to hear from three seasoned political advisors, two Republicans and one Democrat, who spoke about the history of presidential elections as well as the social and demographic changes that are impacting the current election. In preparation for the presentation, CivilEyes conducted a student survey to gather questions for the speakers and to identify the issues students felt were most pertinent. The program was highly informative and successful, a great primer for the 2016 election. Seniors and parents of seniors will all breathe a sigh of relief after Tuesday’s November 1 early deadline. We know this is a stressful time for you. Please know we are here to support you! On November 4, first quarter report cards will be posted and viewable through Educator Online. As you read these reports, please bear in mind that the first quarter grade is simply a snapshot of where each student is at the mid-semester point. It is not a fixed grade and will not appear on a student’s official transcript. Please review these report cards with your child and use them as an opportunity to have your child assess his or her approach and to set goals for the second quarter. Should you have any questions, your child’s advisor is a great place to start. Sign-ups for 9th Grade Parent-Teacher Conferences will also open on November 4. Instructions for signing up for these conferences (through Educator Online) will be sent in a separate e-mail from 9th Grade Dean Diane Scattergood. Please contact Diane (scattergood@sidwell.edu) with any questions about these conferences. Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements 9TH GRADE PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent-teacher conferences for parents of 9th grade students will take place November 11. Parents will be able to register for up to three teacher conferences. Online registration will open on November 4 and will remain open until November 10. Registration instructions will be e-mailed separately to parents of 9th graders. Questions about these conferences should be directed to 9th Grade Dean Diane Scattergood at scattergoodd@sidwell.edu. Since many teachers teach multiple sections of 9th grade classes, they will not be able to meet with all the parents of their students on the conference day. If you are not able to meet with a particular teacher on November 11, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s advisor. Events PBS FALL COFFEE GATHERING: NOV. 15 Parents of Black Students (PBS) invites you to enjoy coffee and tea with other parents in your division for an opportunity to meet new families and to reconnect with old friends. Please join us on Tuesday, November 15, at the location of your choosing. All parents are welcome! Upper School: Zartman Drawing Room, 8:15 a.m. Middle School: Chorus Room, 8:15 a.m. Lower School: Quaker Meeting House, 8:45 a.m. MS FALL PLAY: "THE CHILDREN'S STORY Childrens_Story_Flyer.pdfSidwell Friends Middle School Drama presents The Children’s Story, by James Clavell. Friday, November 11, 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2:00 p.m. Free admission. Reservations required. Call 202-537-8150, or e-mail rahmana@sidwell.edu. Out with the old. In with the New … Order. After a war that was never really fought, the students return to school. But things are different. First, there is resistance. Then, suspicion. Soon, acceptance. Finally, control. Do the new teacher’s motives really match her sugary surprises? Could The Children’s Story someday be our story? BOOK FAIR: NOV. 5 & 6 scan0073.pdfIf books are something you treasure, consider an outing to Politics and Prose to support the Lower School Book Fair. If you mention Sidwell Friends, the store will donate 20 percent of your purchase to SFS. Hungry after shopping? Comet Ping Pong, next to Politics and Prose, will donate 15 percent of your bill to the School. (You must bring your coupon from the fair to Comet.) The book fair has wish lists for Lower School classrooms and the library, as well as a wish list for the Jamaica Library Project. This year, funds raised will be donated to SFS student financial aid. Shereen will be at the book fair on Sunday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m. to read to children. LS librarian Angela Smith is available to help with personal shopping during these times: Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. SCHOOL YEAR ABROAD INFO SESSION/RECEPTION: NOV. 16 The School Year Abroad (SYA) admissions team will be hosting an area reception for interested students and their parents. It will be held Wednesday, November 16, in the Upper School Library from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Light snacks will be served. Please join us and get all of your questions answered about this unique program. PARENT COFFEE WITH QUAKER LIFE CLERKS: OCT. 31 What do Quaker values mean for families at a Friends school? Join the MS and US Quaker Life Clerks for discussion over coffee of the meaning of Quaker values and testimonies, followed by Quaker Meeting for Worship and reflection. We will finish by 8:45 a.m. While timing is geared to US and MS drop-off, all parents are welcome. SFS PARENT SPEAKER: TONY WOLF: NOV. 10 Tony Wolf, author of a number of parenting books that are written with a sense of humor, will be speaking with SFS parents on Wednesday, November 10, at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Light refreshments will be available at 6:30 p.m. Tony’s work is mostly focused on tweens and teens. More about Tony and his writing can be found here. Please feel free to bring any friends whose students are not at Sidwell Friends---we are happy to share our time with Tony. Free child care is offered for school-age children who are part of the SFS community. Please e-mail webbk@sidwell.edu if you plan to use the child care. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “I come back again and again in my own mind to this word Truth. ‘Promptings of love and truth’—these two sometimes seem to be in conflict, but in fact they are inseparable. If we are to know the truth, we must be able to see with unclouded eyes, and then we will love what is real and not what is duty or fancy. Once when I was in the middle of a difficult exercise of Quaker decision making, I wailed to an older and wiser Friend, ‘How can I speak the truth in love when I feel no love?’ Her reply was, ‘Unless you speak the truth there never will be love.’” ---Alison Sharman, 1986 Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
