Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS: ELECTION EDITION Q: If Quakers believe in consensus, then how do Quakers feel about voting in elections? Achieving consensus—or, among Quakers, the even higher bar of achieving unity—becomes increasingly challenging as a method of governance the larger the group of humans making the attempt. In October 1756, Friends stepped away from controlling the “Holy Experiment” of governing Pennsylvania under William Penn’s Pennsylvania Charter of Privileges; and that document even prescribed “elections” as the method of choosing assembly members. Like many others—including Alexander Hamilton—some Quakers have expressed concern about the potential for “tyranny of the majority” in democratic government. During their "quietist period," many Friends turned away from politics altogether. Generally, though, the tension among Quakers has been less about voting than about the choice between striving to bring about change from within government—with all the political and ethical compromise that demands—versus working for change from outside government, for example via lobbying, where your ability to bring about change is limited. That tension continues, but both poles are firmly rooted in an attitude of active political involvement. As for voting in elections, it’s likely that Quakers participate at a far higher rate than the public at large—which is not to say they always admire the choices or appreciate the outcomes. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
