(Dick) W.M. Schoof, national coordinator for security and counterterrorism in the Netherlands, and Brig. Gen. Francis X. Taylor, under secretary for intelligence and analysis in the US Department of Homeland Security. ** Sounds ------------------------------------------------------------ The Financial Times’ Gideon Rachman covers Xi Jinping’s rise as China’s “core” leader in a new podcast, “China’s return to strongman rule (http://podcast.ft.com/2016/11/02/chinas-return-to-strongman-rule/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=697f92ed79-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_11_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-697f92ed79-145367789) .” ** I Like It Like That ------------------------------------------------------------ The great Roger Angell on the Cubbies (http://www.newyorker.com/news/sporting-scene/at-last?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=697f92ed79-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_11_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-697f92ed79-145367789) . ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ Sometimes music sounds different and conjures different feelings or meanings when you hear it in a memorable place. Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild” sounds different than the other thousand times you may have heard it when it blasts from the car stereo while driving in Malibu with the windows open having just emerged from the surf. I was sitting in Jacques Imo’s restaurant in New Orleans last week and had such and experience. The stereo is a big part of setting the scene at Jacques Imo’s. The food, the people, and yes, the libations, all contribute to the atmosphere, but the Uptown funk and rock that drifts out of the restaurant’s loudspeakers can often be the main attraction. I’ve listened to “Light My Fire” by The Doors countless times. But when it came out of nowhere in Jacques Imo’s, I heard it in a different way. It sounded perfect. I haven’t been particularly interested in The Doors since I was about 14. But I love their music, if not their legacy. When I hung out with the band’s keyboardist Ray Manzarek in the early 1990s we talked about their last ever performance, which was in December 1970 in New Orleans. By then lead singer Jim Morrison had become a sad, addicted caricature of a rock star. In the beginning, The Doors were sublime. When I heard it in Jacques Imo’s last week, it made me smile. Maybe it was because “Light My Fire (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdgUn-0DDFs&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=697f92ed79-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2016_11_03&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-697f92ed79-145367789) ” sounded so good in this place that decades before had proved to be the end for the band. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
