Sunday - October 16, 2016 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements 9TH GRADE PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES ANINDYA DEHEJIA '78 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Events GAMETIME! FIELD HOCKEY EJC PARENT WORKSHOP: TOMORROW! PARENTING SPEAKER: OCT. 26 PARENTS OF ASIAN STUDENTS BOOK CLUB: OCT. 18 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School MS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, Spirit Week was a rousing success and did much to cheer all spirits in the hallways. Color day on Tuesday had seniors in neon, juniors in white, sophomores in black, and frosh in pastel. Wednesday’s Pajama day had students dressed in colorful and playful flannels and fleece. Thursday was twin day, and Friday had students dressed in school colors, maroon and gray. Spirit week activities included the three-legged race, a dance-off, a pie-eating contest, and culminated with the Friday afternoon pep rally. I hope you were able to make it to the Homecoming events on Saturday. What a wonderful week! This week, Sidwell Friends will host the accreditation team from the Association of Independent Schools in Maryland and DC (AIMS) as part of our reaccreditation process. The visiting team will observe every class in the school, so students should expect to see members of this team sitting in on their classes. On Wednesday, October 19, sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT in the Athletic Center. Students should plan to arrive early and be in their seats by 7:45 a.m. Punctuality is critical, as the exam will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Students should bring a calculator and several sharpened No. 2 pencils with erasers. Following the PSAT, sophomores and juniors will attend their 5th, 7th, and 8th period classes. Students in grades 9 and 12 will attend all of their classes on Wednesday (an “all-classes-meet” schedule). On the evening of October 20 at 6:30 p.m, the College Counseling office will hold a college program for juniors and their parents in the RLS Meeting Room. Refreshments will be available. The Upper School will be closed on Friday, October 21, for teacher report writing. I’m sure our students will enjoy this second long weekend! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements 9TH GRADE PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES Parent-teacher conferences for parents of 9th grade students will take place November 11. Parents will be able to register for up to three teacher conferences. Online registration will open on November 4 and will remain open until November 10. Registration instructions will be e-mailed separately to parents of 9th graders. Questions about these conferences should be directed to 9th Grade Dean Diane Scattergood at scattergoodd@sidwell.edu. Since many teachers teach multiple sections of 9th grade classes, they will not be able to meet with all the parents of their students on the conference day. If you are not able to meet with a particular teacher on November 11, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s advisor. ANINDYA DEHEJIA '78 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Last year, Sidwell Friends launched the Anindya Dehejia '78 Internship Program, made possible by the Dehejia family to celebrate the memory of their son. The program supports unpaid summer internships for rising 12th graders. These internships are a wonderful, enriching opportunity for the students. If you work at an organization that would be interested in hosting a Sidwell Friends student intern or want to learn more about the program, please contact Robbie Gross in the Upper School at GrossR@sidwell.edu. Events GAMETIME! FIELD HOCKEY The next GAMETIME! is Tuesday, October 18, when the field hockey team takes on Madeira. The game starts at 4:15 p.m. and refreshments will be available on the front porch of the Upper School. Spectators will be facing west—consider wearing your SFS baseball cap or sunglasses! Upper School will celebrate the golf team with Arnold Palmer beverages at lunch on Monday, October 17, the day before the MAC Golf Tournament. The following week, GAMETIME! for girls' tennis is on Tuesday, October 25, at 4:30 p.m., and cross-country will be celebrated in the Upper School before their MAC/ISL championships on October 29. EJC PARENT WORKSHOP: TOMORROW! Sidwell_EJC_Workshop_Flyer_LS_9_28_16_2_1.pdfDo you want to help our School community address the following questions? What positives can come out of a greater focus on equity, justice, and community at Sidwell Friends School, and what concerns/issues do you foresee? If you could create this program in any way you wanted to, what would it look like, how would it operate, and how would you feel about being part of it? What three wishes for the future do you have for equity, justice, and community at Sidwell Friends School? If so, join parents and guardians from all divisions tomorrow, October 17, for an equity, justice, and community parent workshop introduced and facilitated by EJC Director Philip McAdoo; author, attorney, and activist Gyasi Ross; and members of the SFS Faculty EJC Council. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the workshop will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room on the Wisconsin Avenue campus. To help our preparations, we ask that you register here if you plan to attend—but of course, all parents and guardians are welcome whether or not they register in advance. Free childcare will be available for school-age children; please register at the link above as we have a limited number of slots. PARENTING SPEAKER: OCT. 26 2016_PCW_Fall_Speaker_Flyer.pdfTina Payne Bryson, PhD, a psychotherapist and coauthor of The Whole-Brain Child and Teen: Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture the Developing Mind, is speaking as a guest of the Parents Council of Washington on Wednesday, October 26, at 7:00 p.m. at the Landon School. Sidwell Friends is a member of the Parents Council and all are welcome to come to this free talk. The address and other logistical information are posted on the SFS calendar here; the RSVP to the PCW (helpful for their planning) is here. PARENTS OF ASIAN STUDENTS BOOK CLUB: OCT. 18 Please join the Parents of Asian Students committee for our first-ever book club gathering and conversation. On Tuesday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bernstein Drawing Room in Zartman House, we will discuss Celeste Ng's novel, Everything I Never Told You, a literary thriller that focuses on the struggles of an Asian American family in 1970s Ohio. The discussion will be moderated by Patricia Chu, Sidwell Friends parent and professor of English literature at George Washington University. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. To RSVP (if you haven't already done so through Evite), please e-mail SidwellPASevite@gmail.com. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “And oh, how sweet and pleasant it is to the truly spiritual eye to see several sorts of believers, everyone learning their own lesson, performing their own peculiar service, and knowing, owning and loving one another in several places.… For this is the true ground of love and unity, not that such a man walks and does just as I do, but because I feel the same Spirit and life in him…and this is far more pleasing than if he walked in just that track wherein I walk.” —Isaac Penington, 1660 Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu! MS NewsOn top of the world in the middle Rachel Kane brings a strong background in Quaker education to her new job heading up the Middle School.
