Wednesday - December 15, 2010 From the School Message from Lee Palmer, Upper School Principal Dear Friends, As we are about to go our separate ways for winter break I would like to wish everyone a holiday season filled with joy. Information about exam period that has already been distributed to students is below, but please encourage your children to put schoolwork aside for the first week and focus on family, friends, and fun. Students find all different ways to enrich their spirit the second week and should do whatever will lift them up and help them look forward to the new year. The winter solstice is on December 21, and I always look forward to the lengthening of the days and the return of the light. A Maori proverb comes to mind - Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you. Peace, Lee Message from Mamadou Guèye, Academic Dean UPPER SCHOOL MIDYEAR EXAMS SCHEDULE 2010.pdfDear Parents, I am writing to inform you that the exam schedule must be followed as published on the Sidwell Friends School website. Any deviation from the exam schedule must be approved by me. If a student is doubling up in any subject matter, he or she must take both exams on the very day that subject matter midterm exam is scheduled. Students should contact Ms. Morillas (morillasj@sidwell.edu ) before the first exam, January 6, to schedule their double exams. Please encourage your child/ren to adhere to the exam schedule above. Exam Make-up day is scheduled for students who missed exams due to illness and/ or unusual circumstances approved by the Academic Dean only. If school is closed due to inclement weather, we will move the scheduled exam forward by one day (i.e., Thursday exam will become Friday exam). Therefore, students will take the exam they have already studied for upon their return. If you have any questions or concerns about the midterm exam schedule and protocols, please call or email me. Many thanks, Mamadou Guèye Read MoreVariety Show: Here's a Holiday Gift That Keeps on Giving! Let SFS US artists offer you a spectacular way to begin Winter Break! LIFT is a word for which there are many meanings, including what we take to the top of the mountain in order to ski down, platforms we add to shoes to make us a little taller, or what we ride to the rooftop if we happen, “dahling”, to be “doing” London! But thankfully, LIFT, is also a word a lot closer to home -- Read More11th Grade Community Service Project The 11th Grade Parent Reps are excited to announce this year’s community service project for the 11th grade students. Please mark your calendars for Sunday, January 23, 2011, as the 11th grade students (and family and friends) will be serving food, giving away gently used warm weather clothing, and handing out toiletry kits to the homeless, from 8:30am to 12:00pm at the Martin Luther King Public Library, located at 901 G Street, N.W. All of the food will be prepared by the students in their own homes (with a little help from mom or dad?). In addition, all of the items to be included in the toiletry kits will also be donated and assembled by the students (and any family or friends who wish to contribute). This is a tremendous opportunity for the students to participate in a community service project in a very real and tactile way, and perhaps more fully appreciate what being homeless really means. The 11th Grade Parent Reps will be sending out more information to the 11th grade parents in the coming weeks.Friends, Parents, Future SFS Varsity Wrestlers!
