WORLD AFFAIRS BRIEFING: The April 2011 Elections and Nigeria’s Democratic Path Day & Time Monday, December 6 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Location The National Democratic Institute 2030 M St., NW, 5th Floor Washington, D.C. DR. ATTAHIRU JEGA CHAIRMAN OF THE INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION OF NIGERIA DISCUSSES PREPARATIONS FOR THE 2011 ELECTIONS, AND THEIR POTENTIAL IMPACT ON NIGERIA\'S DEMOCRATIZATION EFFORTS. The recent release of the election calendar by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria has rekindled interest in the upcoming elections. Nigeria has scheduled legislative, presidential and gubernatorial elections for April 2, April 9, and April 16, 2011 respectively. These will be Nigeria\u2019s fourth set of national elections since the country undertook the transition from military to civilian rule in 1998 / 99. While the conduct of previous elections was below internationally accepted standards, which led to cynicism among many Nigerians, the appointment of former University Vice Chancellor Professor Attahiru Jega as chairman of INEC in July 2010 raised expectations about institutional reforms within INEC, and significant improvements in the management of the electoral process. Chairman Jega will inform participants of steps being taken to enhance the credibility of the electoral process and plans to forestall the shortcomings and flaws of the past. He will also respond to participant questions on specific aspects of election preparations by INEC. We invite you to join us in what promises to be an informative and enriching discussion. Due to limited space, we ask that you RSVP to Rfarhat@ndi.org by December 5, 2010. This event is co-sponsored by: the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES); the International Republican Institute (IRI); and the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI). IFES, IRI and NDI are working in collaboration with Nigerian partners to help enhance the credibility of the 2011 elections. — * Opt out [2] of reminders about this upcoming event *Unsubscribe [3] from our email list National Democratic Institute for International Affairs address Links: ------ [1] mailto:contactndi@ndi.org [2] http://contribute.ndi.org/https://contribute.ndi.org/civicrm/mailing/optout?reset=1&jid=770&qid=215015&h=28a18fdecdf85c50f4105b00c6c88857b9209268 [3] http://contribute.ndi.org/https://contribute.ndi.org/civicrm/mailing/unsubscribe?reset=1&jid=770&qid=215015&h=28a18fdecdf85c50f4105b00c6c88857b920926
