The event discusses improving internationally comparable sets of sectoral balance sheets, accumulation accounts, and flow of funds for advanced economies. India’s finances The Indian government announces its annual budget. UK TV places products Product placement is allowed in UK television programmes for the first time. A “P” logo will signal which programmes contain placed products. Health plans debated A New Approach to Public Health, a conference in London, discusses what health responsibilities are to be transferred to local authorities under the UK coalition government’s reorganisation plans. Congress and parliament Both houses of the US Congress and UK parliament resume work after the President’s Day recess and half-term break respectively. Tuesday MARCH 1 Hanover hosts ICT event CeBit, the information and communication technology trade fair, opens in the German city (until March 5). It features conferences and product exhibitions designed to meet corporate digital needs. Web marketing rules The UK Advertising Standards Authority’s remit extends to cover marketing on companies’ own websites and in other space under their control, such as Facebook and Twitter. Non-broadcast advertising rules will now apply to such sites. New chief for Lloyds António Horta-Osório, the former chief executive of Santander UK, takes over from Eric Daniels as chief executive of Lloyds Banking Group. Airport finances examined The Airport Economics and Finance Conference and Exhibition begins in London (until March 2), staged by Airports Council International, the sector’s professional association. Air show in Australia The Australian International Air Show and Aerospace and Defence Exposition begins its six-day run at Geelong, Victoria. It features aircraft and weaponry displays, product exhibitions and conferences. Graduate employability A Westminster Forum seminar in London examines approaches to improving graduate employability and the controversial growth of internships. Fashion at the ready Leading fashion designers exhibit their ready-to-wear collections for next autumn and winter in Paris. Wednesday MARCH 2 Global finance Bankers, investors, insurers and policymakers gather in New Delhi to discuss global financial issues at the Institute of International Finance Spring Membership Meeting (until March 4). Marine power promoted Wave & Tidal, the renewable energy conference, takes place in London, focusing on funding and incentives to encourage utilities and manufacturers to advance the UK’s leading position in marine energy. Sustainable energy World Sustainable Energy Days, the conference and trade show on sustainable energy production and use, begins in Wels, Austria (until March 4). Digital growth discussed The two-day FT Digital Media & Broadcasting Conference opens in London. Leaders from the music, broadcasting, advertising, publishing, social media and gaming sectors discuss where growth in digital media lies and the strategies required. Thursday MARCH 3 Geneva hosts motor show The Geneva Motor Show begins, with leading manufacturers unveiling new vehicle models and accessories, with a growing emphasis on cars powered by sustainable fuels and technologies. Insurers’ economic outlook The Association of British Insurers’ Economics and Research Conference in London aims to outline the economic climate facing the industry, including the outlook for monetary and fiscal policy and the international environment. Charles Bean, deputy governor at the Bank of England, is the main speaker. Women scientists Five women scientists from five continents are honoured in Paris at the 2011 L’Oréal-Unesco For Women in Science Awards. By-election in Barnsley A UK by-election is held in the Barnsley Central constituency following the resignation of Labour MP Eric Illsley. He was jailed for a year this month after admitting false accounting of expenses. Welsh hold referendum A referendum takes place in Wales on enhancing the lawmaking power of its devolved national assembly. Friday MARCH 4 EU debt crisis debated Finland hosts a meeting of 14 centre-right European Union leaders, including Angela Merkel, German chancellor, and Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, in Helsinki to discuss the eurozone debt crisis ahead of next week’s Eurozone Summit. National flood test begins A week-long national emergency exercise, known as Exercise Watermark, begins in England and Wales to test arrangements to respond to severe, wide-area flooding. Carnival time in Rio Rio de Janeiro Carnival begins its five-day run. Saturday MARCH 5 China’s congress meets The National People’s Congress, China’s parliament, convenes for its annual session in Beijing.
