It includes talks on topical industry issues by leading executives and discussions on the Middle East, Russia and Africa. Middle East in focus Recent events in Egypt and the wider Middle East and north Africa region are discussed by the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union in Brussels. EU foreign ministers are also expected to consider the Israel-Palestine peace process. Rural economies European Union agriculture ministers gather in Brussels to discuss improving rural economies and supporting their social fabric. Havana hosts cigar fair The Habano Cigar Festival begins in Havana, Cuba (until February 25). The trade fair is designed for those in the industry and enthusiasts. It includes seminars and visits to tobacco plantations and cigar factories. Tuesday FEBRUARY 22 Energy summit in Riyadh Energy ministers from oil and gas producing countries gather in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, for a meeting of the International Energy Forum. They intend to sign the IEF Charter, which commits them to a more open dialogue between energy producing and consuming countries. Renewable energy forum The Eilat-Eilot Renewable Energy International Conference and Exhibition begins in Eilat, Israel (until February 24). It aims to present technological innovation, business opportunities, policies and implementation methods in the renewable energy field. Chicago votes for a mayor The mayoral election takes place in Chicago, with Rahm Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff, the frontrunner among seven candidates. Business aviation analysed The two-day US Corporate Aviation Summit opens in Miami, discussing the future of business aviation, the latest developments in light jets and other issues relating to the industry. Aerospace market Executives from the aerospace industry provide a strategic overview of the global market and their programmes over the next decade at the International Aerospace Exchange in London. Growth sources debated A conference on the contribution of intangible capital resources – such as human capital, research and development, and patents – to generating growth in Europe is held at the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels (until February 23). Austerity effects weighed How the fiscal austerity measures and economic governance reforms under way in the European Union will change societies is debated at a two-day conference in Brussels staged by the European Trade Union Institute and the European Public Sector Unions federation. Women and education The United Nation’s Commission on the Status of Women begins its session in New York (until March 4), primarily discussing the participation of women and girls in education, training, science and technology. Wednesday FEBRUARY 23 Private equity defended The role of private equity and the controversies surrounding it are discussed by Tony James, president of Blackstone, the US private equity group, at the London School of Economics. Winter fashion from Milan Milan Fashion Week opens (until March 1), exhibiting leading clothing designs for women for next autumn and winter. Shakespeare returns The Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon stages its first full production, King Lear, since its four-year, £112.8m redevelopment. Thursday FEBRUARY 24 Panama potential debated The economic growth of Panama and its potential as a regional hub for foreign investors is debated at a Latin American Cities Conference in Panama City. Scientific enterprise How Britain can develop new technologies, nurture creativity and encourage world-beating products is discussed at the SciTech conference in London. Friday FEBRUARY 25 Irish go to the polls The Irish Republic holds a general election following the country’s economic crisis. The opposition centre-right Fine Gael party is expected to emerge with the most parliamentary seats. Sarkozy to visit Turkey Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France, is due to visit Turkey. France is the principal opponent of Turkey’s desire to join the European Union. Pension options outlined Europe’s pension crisis is debated at a European Policy Centre forum in Brussels. Speakers include Raphäel Hadas-Lebel, president of the French Pensions Advisory Council, and Alison McKie, head of life and health products at Swiss Re. Saturday FEBRUARY 26 Retailers talk shop EuroShop, the global retail trade fair and conference, opens in Düsseldorf, Germany (until March 2). Carnival time in Venice The historic Venice Carnival begins (until March 8), including arts events and the usual array of glamorous costumes and maritime processions. England play France Italy play Wales in Rome and England face France in London in the Six Nations rugby union tournament. Scotland host Ireland in Edinburgh on Sunday.
