The Penn Vet Working Dog Center is training dogs to use their incredible sense of smell to detect early-stage ovarian cancer. In a Center for Public Health Initiatives seminar, the collaborative research and its potential for growth and impact were highlighted.

To further strengthen student wellness programs at Penn, University leadership has announced significant next steps. One innovation will be the appointment of a chief wellness officer to oversee Counseling and Psychological Services, the Student Health Service, and the Office of Alcohol and Other Drug Program Initiatives. Also on the agenda are additional streamlining of CAPS service times; implementation of phone, video and app-based technologies; and even more support for students who may be in crisis. The goal: a healthy and supportive campus environment in which every member of our community can thrive.

The New York Times featured research by Diana Mutz of the Annenberg School for Communication and the School of Arts and Sciences finding that the 2016 presidential election was not influenced by voters’ economic grievances as much as by white, Christian, and/or male voters fearing loss of status in the U.S. and the world. “It’s not a threat to their own economic well-being; it’s a threat to their group’s dominance in our country over all,” says Mutz, who directs the Institute for the Study of Citizens and Politics.

Hey Day started in 1916, and it’s still as colorful and robust as ever. On College Green last Thursday, President Amy Gutmann declared juniors to be seniors, and members of the Class of 2019 whooped and hollered their approval. In a relatively new tradition called the Final Toast, members of the Class of 2018 celebrated their soon-to-be status as alumni. With the President’s Engagement Prize, senior Alaina Hall of Plymouth, Minn., is building a project called “Healthy Pequeños,” or “Healthy Little Ones.” Her work aims to help children in a Mexican orphanage fight infectious disease. Hall is being mentored by Cynthia Connolly and Nancy Biller of the School of Nursing.

Ashley Marcus, a senior on the women’s fencing team from Golden Beach, Fla., has been awarded the Wooden Citizenship Cup by Athletes for a Better World, an organization that uses sports to develop character, teamwork, and citizenship. A communications major, Marcus is committed to fighting bullying and sexual violence by helping to rewrite legislation, authoring a book, and public speaking.

Maura Kimmel, a sophomore on the women’s track & field team from West Sunbury, Pa., chats about her record-breaking shot put and discus throws. Kimmel, enrolled in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, is the school record-holder in both outdoor events. She was a 2018 Indoor Second-Team All-Ivy selection in the shot put.
