Superior Court of Los Angeles County that could make it substantially more difficult for businesses in California to show that their workers are independent contractors rather than employees. The Chamber filed two amicus briefs in the California Supreme Court (https://t.e2ma.net/click/relcld/r2f0ql/7qhuvq) opposing this result. The implications of the Court’s 82-page opinion may take years to play out as companies litigate what this decision means for their particular workers. But this is a bad result, which will result in higher litigation costs and greater liability risk for businesses in California using independent contractors. While this decision is being portrayed as bad for companies in the gig economy space it has the potential to impact a much broader universe of industries such as: insurance, trucking, oil & gas, and healthcare. C_TEC is hosting a call on Tuesday, May 8th to discuss the decision. Two of our colleagues from the U.S. Chamber's Litigation Center—Steven Lehotsky, Chief Counsel, and Warren Postman, Chief Counsel for Appellate Litigation—will review the decision, provide an analysis, and answer questions from participants on the call. Please contact Julie Stitzel (mailto:jstitzel@uschamber.com?subject=) with specific questions on this case. We look forward to connecting on Tuesday.
