In boardrooms and on Capitol Hill, the cry for Americans to pick up the slack and put education on the front burner so the U.S. can compete in a global market is being repeated. Yet, at the same time, and in many cases the same hallowed halls of government or business, another demand is being shouted from the rooftops. Democrats and Republicans, Governors and Mayors are calling for the dismantling of their teachers' right to collective bargaining. Across party lines, leaders are calling for drastic action. In Wisconsin, the Republican governor and the Republican led state legislature are calling for the end to collective bargaining. In Providence, Rhode Island, a Democrat stronghold, every teacher in the city of Providence received a pink slip last week - in order to pressure their unions wiping out the collective bargaining agreement between the city and its teachers so the newly elected mayor can pick and chose who returns to the classroom - restoring to this capitol city its recent history of corrupt political patronage. At a pivotal time in the U.S. economy, with China and India clearly surpassing American children in the areas of math, science and technology, the need to build a national cadre of educated young people who will become the next US competitive generation is being hammered by short term thinking. Balancing the budget is one thing - but bankrupting the future of all Americans is quite another. Every month, we will bring you articles, photos, and updates about the numerous countries and issues we believe are most important. Global news is changing fast and we've got a handle on it. Now, so do you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Global Infrastructure Not Just Nuts and Bolts The "jobs bill" Congress has been considering is not merely reduced but absolutely ravaged - its $15 billion dollars includes negligible funding for infrastructure spending. But infrastructure is not just filling in potholes or repairing roadways. It's about creating jobs and income - that directly lead to more consumer spending Infrastructure doesn't have to be just for 'home grown' projects. For Americans to compete in a global market, a 'new' international infrastructure must be created and maintained. When you think about infrastructure, you probably don't think about job creation-but you should. Every project, from milling and paving roadways to re-strengthening bridges requires workers, and creates new job opportunities for many. It is estimated that new national projects could create a solution to our startling unemployment rate, now at 9.8 percent but only recently hovering at 10.1 percent. Though still too high, the drop in these figures shows something important. These figures show that the 2009 fiscal stimulus package has worked. But the devil is in the details. Though change determined by the people is a powerful message based in the tenants of democracy, the question remains: Who will replace the dictators? And will the military temporary "rulers" continue to hear and respond to the voice of their nation's citizens? While we wait with baited breath for those new governments to form, we must also keep a watchful eye on the challenges and responses of the regions' monarchies. Popularity of these monarchies for the most part continues. While the repressive dictators-like Libya's Kaddafi and Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh killed, imprisoned, tortured or used violence to thwart protesters, the Royal families have shown a different face. Members of Congress are battling over the deficit, with a possible government shut down narrowly averted. While it's smart to save money and lessen the deficit, with so many freshman members of Congress who gained their seats by running on a 'cut at any cost' platform, a hyper focus on the deficit may be leading Democrats and Republicans to obsess over only one piece of the puzzle. Partisan attacks between Democrats and Republicans are expected but stripping the government of all discretionary programs or shutting it down is irresponsible and no solution to the complex fiscal problems hammering the nation. The new 87 so called "Tea Party" members are clamoring for more and more cuts-refusing to participate in a dialogue about the complexity of the US fiscal crises or the multi-dimensional solution that is needed. Instead, these freshmen are eager to bring about "change", but don't have the experience to understand that "changing" the fiscal reality our nation faces national budget takes more rhetoric and a sledgehammer. All budgets are state priorities - and what you "leave in" is even more important than what you "cut". Instead of just focusing on cutting the budget - and the deficit - it's time to take a more balanced approach. It's time to create more jobs.
