Lauren, Thank you for sharing this information with us. Best, Kathleen On Feb 15, 2011, at 01:32 PM, Lauren Phillips <phillipsl@sidwell.edu> wrote: Dear Kathleen, Although it is still chilly, summer will be here before we know it. The second trimester is winding down and sixth grade teachers are beginning to think about students who could use some extra academic support during the summer months. Although I do not see it as a necessity, it may be beneficial for Finnegan to participate in a summer program. One program that might be particularly helpful is the Middle School Review course. I have included a description of this course below. Please let Anne Kennedy or me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you, Lauren Middle School Review (July 5- July 29) This full-morning program offers students entering Grades 6-8 the chance to bolster their skills in math, reading, and writing. Taught by a team of Sidwell Friends Middle School teachers, this program is designed to model a regular middle school morning, with students rotating through different periods devoted to the study of math, reading, and writing. MS Math: Each day, students will spend a part of their morning refining their pre-algebraic computational and reasoning skills. Extensive practice dealing with rational expressions involving fractions, negative numbers, percents, and decimals will sharpen students’ computational fluency. Furthermore, an introduction to basic algebraic notation will give students an opportunity to apply these skills towards simplifying and evaluating expressions involving variables. A review of fundamental geometric formulas and principles, along with a study of linear graphing techniques, will enable students to improve their computational accuracy while developing their spatial reasoning skills. Emphasis will be placed on developing a neat and organized problem-solving style. Students will also develop their ability to check work methodically for careless mistakes. MS Reading: During the Reading period, students will focus on developing competency and confidence with reading. Students will read a variety of materials, including novels, short stories, articles, plays, and poems We will discuss and develop critical reading skills as students learn to identify text structures, preview texts, and summarize and synthesize texts. MS Writing: During the Writing portion of the Middle School Review program, students will focus on developing greater precision in diction, crafting sentences, developing paragraphs, and using correct punctuation. Students will have the opportunity to write about the various texts they read during the Reading period of the program. Students will write analytical essays and personal reflections. Becky Farnum and Adrian Sotela are experienced Sidwell Friends Middle School teachers. Tuition: $1,400 (9:00 am – Noon); $1,900 (9:00 am – 3:00 pm, PM ExploreStar workshops) Please note: students enrolled only in the morning course, must leave campus at noon. phillipsl@sidwell.edu 202) 537 - 8424 Sidwell Friends School 6th Grade Teacher 3825 Wisconsin Ave. NW WDC, 20016 <image001.jpg> Before you print this or other documents, please consider the impact on the environment
