Topics include the regional economic outlook, investment opportunities and the property market. IMF hosts growth talks The International Monetary Fund hosts a “A Post Crisis Conversation” conference on macroeconomic growth policies in Washington (until March 8). Obama meets Gillard Barack Obama, US president, holds talks with Julia Gillard, Australia’s prime minister, in Washington. They will discuss issues of the Asia-Pacific region, Afghanistan and G20 matters. Discovery’s final landing The Nasa space shuttle Discovery, which has flown more missions than any other spacecraft – 39 – is due to land at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, after its final flight. The 27-year-old craft is returning from the International Space Station. Tuesday MARCH 8 Gulf water and energy Wetex, the water and energy technology exhibition for the Gulf region, begins its three-day run in Dubai. The event includes a range of seminars on water, energy and environmental issues. Aerospace event takes off The Asian Aerospace exhibition and congress begins at Hong Kong airport (until March 10), focusing on the development of commercial aviation interests in China and throughout Asia. Africa hosts trade event The two-day Africa Trade and Export Finance Conference opens in Cape Town, South Africa. It will discuss financing challenges the continent faces over export growth. Treasury reviewed Demos, the think-tank, launches a pamphlet in London reviewing the recent history of the UK Treasury, and advocating improvements to the design, scrutiny and implementation of economic policy. Women’s Day reaches 100 International Women’s Day marks its centenary with events in many countries celebrating the achievements of women. New Orleans Mardi Gras The Mardi Gras, or “Fat Tuesday”, parades take place in New Orleans, bringing an end to the city’s carnival season. Wednesday MARCH 9 UK defence investigated Senior UK ministers are quizzed by the Commons defence committee on the strategic defence and security review and the national security strategy. They include Liam Fox, defence secretary, and William Hague, foreign secretary. US trade agenda weighed Ronald Kirk, US trade representative, appears before the Senate finance committee in Washington as it examines the president’s 2011 trade agenda. Media chiefs gather The two-day Media Summit opens in New York, analysing the challenges facing the industry. Sport in business All aspects of professional sport, including marketing, sponsorship and the media, are discussed at the Global Sports Forum in Barcelona (until March 11). Travel trade on show The ITB Berlin world travel trade event (until March 13) hosts more than 11,000 exhibitors. Bonhams hosts Clapton Auction house Bonhams holds a sale in New York of more than 70 guitars from Eric Clapton’s collection to benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a drug rehabilitation centre founded by the musician. Thursday MARCH 10 Single patent discussed The European Union Competitiveness Council is expected to launch plans for creating a single patent system for participating member states. Job skills examined European labour market policies are debated at a conference in Brussels. Nobel Prize winner Christopher Pissarides will discuss his work on the economics of employment. Spain’s bank rules change The law requiring Spanish banks to hold core capital ratios of 8 per cent for listed banks and 10 per cent for financial institutions takes effect. Finance summit starts Global economic issues, the rise of China and sustainable technologies are among the topics to be discussed at the two-day London International Financial Summit in Irvine, California. Speakers include Henry Paulson, the former US treasury secretary. Pensions report published Lord Hutton, who chairs the Pensions Commission, publishes his final report on reform of UK public sector pensions to make them more sustainable and affordable. Friday MARCH 11 EU debates Libya reaction European leaders meet in Brussels for an extraordinary meeting of the European Council to discuss strategy on the unrest in the Middle East and north Africa, focusing on Libya in particular. Eurozone leaders meet Leaders of the eurozone countries discuss in Brussels proposals for a “pact for competitiveness” aimed at preventing a recurrence of sovereign debt crises. They include limiting public spending, wages and state pensions, and are expected to be presented to a full European Union summit later in the month. ‘Day of Rage’ planned Anti-government protesters have called for a “Day of Rage” in Saudi Arabia following uprisings in the Gulf and the north of Africa. Home products on show The Ideal Home Show opens in London (until March 27), exhibiting a vast range of products for the home and garden. Saturday MARCH 12 Six Nations rugby returns Italy play France in Rome while Wales entertain Ireland at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff. England play Scotland at Twickenham on Sunday. Sunday MARCH 13 Daylight Saving begins Most regions of the US and Canada begin Daylight Saving Time. Clocks are moved forward one hour.
