500 DAYS OF SUMMER (INTERNS) - "Portman brings on 500 interns to power field program," by Campaign Pro's Maggie Severns: "GOP Sen. Rob Portman is bringing on a whopping 500 interns to work full-time for his Ohio campaign this summer, part of an effort to build a sprawling field campaign capable of driving Portman to victory no matter what happens in the presidential race. ... Having hundreds and hundreds of young people signed up to work full-time, some of them for college credit, is highly unusual for a Senate campaign, observers said. Their presence signals the Portman's campaign's emphasis on person-to-person interaction and sophisticated targeting ahead of an election when the
Republican might need support from Hillary Clinton voters to win, if the GOP's fears about Donald Trump come true and he struggles in the presidential race." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=d7f402923f2c17f54f7d67e4e54cc593036551a29789d90e1ed22120ecf29a89

ONE-ON-ONE - "POLITICO Pro Q&A: Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips," by Campaign Pro's Scott Bland: "The presidential election is attracting hundreds of millions of dollars in outside political spending already this year. But one of the biggest-spending groups hasn't spent a dime on that race - and has no plans to change that soon." AFP President Tim Phillips spoke about that, the group's 2016 Senate priorities, and more in an interview:

- On AFP's growing ground game: We now have the largest number of field staff, field offices and grass-roots activists engaged across the country that we ever have. In a place like Florida, a crucial state, we have 16 field offices there, dozens and dozens of staff. And these are not individuals who are brought in for a particular time of year or election - this is a permanent infrastructure. Our latest office in the greater Jacksonville area, that's not a pop-tent thing; that'll be there in 2017 and 2018.

- Where Trump has departed mosted from AFP's policy preferences: Entitlement reform is an issue we've been involved in for years. The Ryan budgets of 2011 and '12, they were important to us. For the first time Medicaid and Medicare reform was passed that put those programs on a path to solvency and did a better job of helping people. We'd like to see Mr. Trump change what he's discussing there. Free trade is an important issue for us, and we are deeply disappointed to see it demagogued by a lot of these Republican candidates - and not just Mr. Trump, by the way. Sen. [Ted] Cruz and some other Republicans have demagogued free trade. More here: http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=d7f402923f2c17f5e4a4708124ec56837e24a2059fdc69892262d166243e0ea6

MONEYBOMB - Sanders endorses against Wasserman Schultz, teases fundraising for more candidates this week: Sanders just endorsed his fourth House candidate, and it's a big one: Tim Canova, who is challenging DNC chair and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz in her Florida primary this summer. In a fundraising email for Canova, who has already raised over $1 million and raked in online money from Berners, Sanders wrote, "In the days ahead, we're going to add a dozen or more additional candidates" to the list of Sanders endorsees. Sanders digital director Kenneth Pennington also teased new endorsements coming on Twitter.

- Already, three Democratic candidates (Lucy Flores in Nevada, Zephyr Teachout in New York, and Pramila Jayapal in Washington) have reported huge fundraising hauls in the weeks after Sanders emailed his list for them. More game-changing money appears to be on its way to the down-ballot landscape.

CASH DASH - On Friday the NRSC announced raising "$4.2 million in April and had $21.5 million on hand at the end of that month, a committee aide said today. The NRSC's cash on hand rose from just over $20 million at the end of March. The DSCC has not released its April numbers yet; it had $19 million on hand at the end of March." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=532a091840fdb0e287334b6b20d269bcf8ff65154a50b5129fd0677c87613bfe

- MORE APRIL NUMBERS - DCCC: $8.6 million raised, $48.1 million on hand. NRCC: $5.4 million raised, $53 million on hand. RNC: $12.5 million raised, $17.4 million on hand. DNC: $8.5 million raised, $8 million on hand. Senate Leadership Fund: $1.2 million raised, $16.3 million on hand. Senate Majority PAC: $4.8 million raised (including $2.5 million from the carpenters union's Working for Working Americans), $10.1 million on hand.

- FATHER FALLOUT - "Democratic Rep. Ami Bera, whose father is awaiting sentencing on two felony counts of election fraud, for years has engaged in a complex series of campaign donations involving his parents and families of other congressional candidates, federal records show. Beginning six years ago, when he unsuccessfully challenged former Republican Rep. Dan Lungren, Bera and his family wrote checks to other Democrats, almost always for the maximum amount allowed under federal law. Those candidates or their families gave similar amounts to Bera, and the contributions often occurred within days of one another," The Sacramento Bee reported. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=532a091840fdb0e268086cff129ba6fe2f942d016ff10fe43b70c10270a33943

OUTSIDE GROUPS ON THE AIRWAVES - From NRCC ... The National Republican Campaign Committee's TV ad in California's 24th District attacks both Democrats, Salud Carbajal and Helene Schneider - but while the ad casts the DCCC-backed Carbajal as a greedy in-it-for-himself politician, it highlights Schneider's progressive stances on the environment and health care ahead of the June 7 top-two primary. - Chamber launches TV ads in four Senate battlegrounds: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is purchasing more than $10 million worth of TV airtime to attack Democratic Senate candidates in New Hampshire, Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The ads in Ohio and New Hampshire began airing Saturday, with the Wisconsin and Pennsylvania ads coming later. ... - From Senate Majority PAC ... A new ad from Senate Majority PAC attacks Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey for being too close to Wall Street with some feline assistance. A media-buying source previously told Campaign Pro the $1.2 million ad buy covered the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre markets. PRESIDENTIAL SPEED READ - "Hillary Clinton's Lead Over Donald Trump Narrows," by The Wall Street Journal's Patrick O'Connor: "Republicans have rallied behind Donald Trump in the weeks since he effectively clinched his party's presidential nomination, helping him narrow Democrat Hillary Clinton's once double-digit lead to just 3 percentage points, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll shows. Mrs. Clinton leads the New York businessman, 46% to 43%, in a test matchup between the two likely nominees, the poll finds. That represents a much tighter margin than her 11-percentage-point lead in April and marks the first time in Journal/NBC News polling this year that her support has dropped below
50% in a contest with Mr. Trump. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who faces long odds of wresting the Democratic nomination from Mrs. Clinton, leads Mr. Trump by a much wider, 15-point margin, 54% to 39%, in a hypothetical matchup." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=aedb52b3fd51428e4dd2f8d56f0f5a47891aa11570e766f7757669d4352691d7

- "Trump's campaign dwarfed by Clinton's," by POLITICO's Kenneth P. Vogel and Isaac Arnsdorf: "At the outset of the general election, Hillary Clinton's campaign looks like a well-oiled juggernaut next to Donald Trump's vastly smaller, self-funded operation, a POLITICO analysis of Federal Election Commission reports filed Friday found. Through the end of last month, the period covered by the most recent FEC filings, Trump's campaign had spent less than a third as much Clinton's ($57 million to $182 million) and had assembled a staff about one-tenth the size of her (70 employees to 732), with a fraction as many offices (Trump last month paid $101,000 in rent vs. $328,000 for Clinton), the
analysis found."http://politi.co/1WHOYyb

- "Democrats turn to Schumer to fix Sanders rift," by POLITICO's Annie Karni: As Hillary Clinton becomes increasingly frustrated with Bernie Sanders' dogged campaign against the party establishment, Democrats backing the front-runner have recently begun looking to a peacemaker: Sen. Chuck Schumer. And Schumer has been telling lawmakers in recent days he believes he could be a helpful bridge between the two feuding camps, a Democratic source familiar with the conversations said. The New York senator enjoys a close relationship with Clinton, whom he helped usher into politics when she served as his junior senator." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=aedb52b3fd51428e3ad434f5e178326ca9534d67f4f4e3bd67c2a2a876507078

CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "At least they're not calling me the Adolf Hitler of the Democratic Senate race. They haven't quite gone there yet. It's only a matter of time before they accuse me of both cannibalism and necrophilia." - Rep. Alan Grayson, at a Florida Democratic Party fundraising dinner this weekend, via The Orlando Sentinel. http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=aedb52b3fd51428e35348517f2370a63cb05415e4d60c453c178dea90f1590ee
