ALL-COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP: JUNE 5 END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATION WITH PBS, PLAS, PAS Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School US NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, We are really winding down the school year and beginning the planning process for next year. Students were sent home with a sign-up sheet for selecting an advisor for next year. We highly recommend that students in grades 10 and 11 remain with their current advisor to maintain a sense of consistency and continuity. Ninth graders will need to select a new advisor for next year. Many are wondering how they should go about this selection process. I want to assure you that your child will have a good advisory experience no matter which advisory he or she lands in. Class elections were held on Monday for Student Government and Honor Committee. Congratulations to our newly elected student leaders! Next year’s 9th grade class will hold elections in September. Another reminder about the June exam start times: All regular exams will begin at 10:00 am. Students who qualify for extra time will begin their exams at 9:30 a.m. Please see the schedule below. Please join us for the Spring Play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The final show takes place this afternoon at 2:30! This means that the Parents Association is closing out its 2015/16 books and setting its 2016/17 budget. But we can't do either without receiving as many reimbursement requests as possible by June 15. So please submit them asap, either by dropping them in the PA mailbox at Zartman House or by mailing them to the PA treasurer, Mike Raibman. Please remember that you need to submit original receipts with your reimbursement request. E-mail Mike with any questions (mikeraibman@gmail.com). Thanks for your help! ALL-COMMUNITY MEETING FOR WORSHIP: JUNE 5 Join members of our community at Meeting for Worship on Sunday June 5, at 10:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Refreshments will be served at the rise of meeting. Young school-age children will be invited to leave meeting after about 15 minutes to join the children’s program. Please let Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu) know if your child will participate in the children’s program. END-OF-YEAR CELEBRATION WITH PBS, PLAS, PAS Parents and students from all three divisions are cordially invited to join the Parents of Black Students (PBS), Parents of Latino Students (PLAS), and Parents of Asian Students (PAS) for an end-of-year reception. We will be gathering in the Upper School Dining Room on Tuesday, May 31, from 6:00--8:00 p.m. Please join us as we recognize the graduating seniors, hear from the seniors and their parents on how one successfully navigates the journey through Sidwell Friends School, and listen to others discuss the School’s Equity, Justice, and Community program. Come and enjoy the opportunity to meet and greet other parents in the community before summer is upon us. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Fuentes at lisafuentes@gmail.com or Nicole Lang at washpeds@verizon.net. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Last week, we addressed Quakers’ internal decision-making process—given how much of a departure this represents from politics as we often experience it, one might think that Quakers avoid electoral politics. In fact, Quakers have played an important role in our politics since the colonial era---not just in their original base of Pennsylvania, but in many states. Two men raised as Quakers signed the Declaration of Independence, three signed the Constitution, and seven served in the first Congress under the new Constitution. Presidents Herbert Hoover and Richard Nixon were raised as Quakers, and recently retired Congressman Rush Holt is a Quaker. Former Sidwell Friends parent and trustee Diane Randall runs the Friends Committee on National Legislation, a Quaker lobby in the public interest. The fact that three Quakers will be among the five leaders of the women's suffrage movement to be featured on the back of the $10 bill—Lucretia Mott, Susan B Anthony, and Alice Paul—underscores how Quakers have often played leading roles in expanding democracy to more voices. Today, FairVote, a Quaker-led organization, seeks to "respect every vote" through registering all eligible to vote, establishing ranked choice voting to encourage candidates to reach beyond their base, increasing representation of women, and instituting American forms of proportional representation. Now used in most established democracies, proportional representation challenges the notion of "winner-takes-all"—meaning 51% of the vote will earn a majority but not all seats. In Britain, Quakers have been the key funders of the drive to establish proportional representation. The first known use of proportional representation in American elections was instituted by William Penn in what is now New Jersey. Such reflective representation may not guarantee the unity Quakers seek, but at least would provide more inclusive access to the policymaking table. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. For questions about Quaker quotes, e-mail Cynthia Terrell at ctcabin@gmail.com. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
