McKenna and Associates (www.mcka.com) is in the process of compiling all of the input they've received from the survey and public visioning session. Individual responses will remain anonymous and results will not be filtered/altered. The next opportunity for public involvement will be at the June 20 Advisory Plan Commission meeting at 7 p.m. CST (Town Hall), where McKenna will provide an update. Future dates will be announced. New Trees Planted The Town Beautification Committee selected 12 new trees (non-invasive) that were planted in the park across from Town Hall and the Community Center and along Oriole Trail. The new trees, which include Autumn Flame Red Maples, Dogwoods and more were donated by NIPSCO as replacements to the half dozen trees that needed to be removed. Beach Cleanup Thank You Thank you to the residents and friends who braved the cloudy, rainy weather and cleaned up so many beach stop areas on April 30. Thank you especially to the Long Beach Volunteer Fire Department, Police Department, Streets Department and Water Department for their incredible support in getting rid of the large items. Building Height Proposed Changes Following more than a year of research, led by the Long Beach Fire Safety Committee, a comprehensive review of the Town's current building height ordinance was conducted. The Indiana State Fire Marshall validated that the existing Town codes were "unreasonable" and "cause undue risk" to residents, firefighters and emergency responders (local and neighboring) and that a change was necessary. It has been proposed to revert back to the building ordinance similar to what was in place prior to 2003. The Advisory Plan Commission has scheduled a public hearing to solicit public input on June 7 at 7 p.m. CST in Long Beach Town Hall. Proposed changes and findings can be found at www.longbeachin.org. [http://www.longbeachin.org] Written comments may also be submitted via email to [longbeachapc@gmail.com], or dropped off at Town Hall (Attn: APC Members). Groundwater Contamination Issue Update: June 8 On Wednesday, June 8 at 6 p.m. CST in the Long Beach Community Center Gym, a special meeting of the Town Council will be held to share with the community the latest updates regarding the monitoring of the molybdenum contamination of ground water spreading north from the Criterion Catalyst plant through the far western end of Long Beach and Beachwalk. Representatives of Cytec (the company that owns the property surrounding the plant and responsible for the monitoring), Jerry O'Callaghan from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and Michael Kuss from the Michigan City Sanitary District will be present.
