If you're like me, you've been outraged by the recent string of Republican
political attacks on women's health and safety.

Last week, House Republicans opened a hearing on women's health that
featured a panel comprised exclusively of men. Their purpose for the hearing
was to attempt to deny insurance coverage for women seeking access to
birth control. Republican senators have even introduced legislation to allow
employers to deny their female employees coverage for contraception.

And now, Senate Republicans are trying to stand in the way of women's safety
and block the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women's Act (VAWA).

We need to make sure they hear from us. Politics should never come before
women's health and safety.

With your help earlier this month, we were able to pass VAWA through the
Senate Judiciary Committee. But now the bill is under threat, leaving vital
programs that protect women hanging in the balance.

Yesterday I convened a roundtable discussion with local law enforcement
officials and community leaders to discuss why it's important to them that
Congress reauthorizes VAWA.

We need to get the word out that VAWA is in jeopardy.

Since it was first enacted in 1994, VAWA has helped reduce domestic
violence incidents by 50% by giving law enforcement the tools to prosecute and
prevent future attacks and funding programs that provide necessary
resources to victims.

This year's reauthorization will strengthen the capacity of law enforcement to
stop domestic violence, expand support for programs that help victims, and
prevent discrimination in support for victims based on gender identity and
sexual orientation.

We can't let Congressional Republicans get their way and put politics ahead
of women's health and safety. It's time to stand up and be heard.
