Beau Biden scholarship winners named
GARY EMEIGH/THE NEWS JOURNAL
Former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden less

The foundation that created the Beau Biden Memorial Scholarship
<https://icoulddogreatthings.org/scholarships-prizes/> to honor the late
attorney general announced its first two recipients Friday.

Sean Dermott, a graduating senior from Cab Calloway School of the Arts,
will receive the Gold Award of $10,000. Jacob DiSabatino, a graduating
senior from St. Mark's High School, will receive the $2,500 Silver Award.

The scholarship was established by the I Could Do Great Things Foundation
in honor of Biden, the son of Vice President Joe Biden, who died last year.
It is designed to go to college-bound seniors who "embody the virtues of
Beau Biden, who exhibited qualities of leadership, community, civility,
respect and a strong moral compass."

The selection team consists of members of the Biden family, who reviewed
applications from 140 seniors.

"Sean and Jacob are both accomplished students who have demonstrated
academic excellence and first-rate leadership ability, and stood out among
the dozens of qualified students who applied," Hallie Biden, Beau's wife
and a selection panelist, said in a statement. "We envision that they will
indeed go on to do great things there and beyond, and carry Beau’s legacy
of service and accomplishment."

Dermott is graduating with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, and was
captain of the school's Science Olympiad Team, principal cellist in its
Chamber Orchestra, president of the French Club, and a delegate to Delaware
Boys' State.

DiSabatino earned a 3.4 GPA, was senior class president and started the
22in22 campaign, which helped raise funds for the nonprofit Stop Soldier
Suicide. In 2015, the organization raised $20,000 in Delaware and $100,000
nationally.

"Both of these graduates are exemplary citizens whom the Scholarship was
intended to recognize," Ashley Biden, Beau's sister, said in a
statement. "Through their personal essays, recommendations and individual
interviews, Sean and Jacob have shown their love of academics and learning
as well as their commitment to service and helping others."
