I wanted to share some good news on the thought leadership front. In light of this week’s World Humanitarian Summit, Rick and Allan produced three well-written and timely thought pieces leading up to this important event. · Rick published a Letter-to-the Editor in the International New York Times<http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/16/opinion/ethiopia-and-the-end-of-famine.html> and on nytimes.com regarding the Ethiopian drought, responding to a recent opinion piece by Alex de Waal -- Is the Era of Great Famines Over? Rick called on the international community to demonstrate without delay the political will necessary to make adequate resources available to address the needs of at-risk populations. · Rick also published an oped in The Huffington Post about the upcoming World Humanitarian Summit<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rick-leach/why-the-first-ever-world_b_10067028.html>. He called for a change in mindset to deal with protracted crises and displacement is urgently needed. Displacement has traditionally been seen as a short-term emergency. But it is equally a challenge to long-term progress. · And finally, Allan – just shortly before his retirement – co-wrote an op-ed with the head of Bank of America’s Foundation about the critical role of the private sector in responding to global crises like Syria and Yemen. The piece was published in TIME<http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rick-leach/why-the-first-ever-world_b_10067028.html>. We welcome your feedback on these pieces and hope to have the chance to discuss in a few weeks at the June board meeting.
