The Variety Show is Next Week - Get Your Tickets Now!

The Tenth Anniversary of the Variety Show is Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 8 pm in the Kogod Arts Center. It will be followed by a reception with the performers. You’ll feel warm in January as talented alumni who’ve become professional performing artists return to entertain us for the benefit of student financial aid. You and your children will enjoy a wonderful program, as your children get the subtle but powerful message that this is what can happen if you practice! PA Announcements

US Donations Drive in support of 11th Grade Service Project ending Friday, January 20 - DONATIONS URGENTLY NEEDED

The 11th grade students and families will be serving home-cooked hot meals and distributing toiletries and warm clothing to the homeless outside the MLK Library this coming Sunday, January 22. While 11th grade families will be preparing the meals, this is an excellent opportunity for the rest of the US to contribute by donating any of the items listed below. Collection boxes can be found outside the Principal's Office and the Dean of Students' Office. The collection has been slow, and with only a few days left before the event, please consider helping the 11th grade class make this worthwhile project a success. To those who have already donated, THANK YOU! Please contact June Das Gupta at junedasgupta@msn.com if you have any questions.

Sunday, January 22 -- 11th Grade Community Service Project

Dear 11th grade families:

You are needed to make the 11th Grade Community Service Project a success! We are seeking participation of 100% of 11th grade families! We particularly need cooking talent (or proficiency) and drivers of vehicles large enough for tables! Please sign up for tasks through the links below, as soon as possible.

Our objective: All 11th graders and their families will take part in a project to serve warm, home-cooked food and to distribute toiletries and clothing to the homeless.

Time: Sunday, January 22, 2012, 8:15 am (set-up), 9:00 am (food service) to 11:45 am.

Place: The plaza in front of DC’s Martin Luther King Library, 901 G Street, NW (Gallery Place Metro). Students not on the set-up crew should arrive at 9 am and will be assigned tasks at that time.

For those who cannot attend Sunday: We are looking for students to assemble the donated items after school on Friday, January 20th from 2:30-5:30 pm — room to be announced.

ArtRageous: FINAL CALL FOR PERFORMERS!

Performers -- ArtRageous will go off like fireworks on January 29 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.! If you have something you want to perform, please contact Maude Fish at maude.fish@comcast.net. She can schedule performers on a first come/first serve basis to include: singers, dancers, rock bands, orators, musicians, magicians, actors, and more. Boxopolis and Totem Poles

Have boxes left over from the holidays? Just moved and don’t know what to do with your boxes? Here’s the answer: donate your boxes to Boxopolis. This is a wonderful, fun, creative activity during Artrageous on Sunday, January 29 from 1:00 – 4:00. Kids of all ages (meaning adults too) can build anything they would like out of the boxes. The sky’s the limit!

We will also collect toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, gift wrapping rolls, etc. for our new totem pole project. Feel free to drop them before Artrageous at the box drop spot or bring them with you.

Starting Monday, January 23, there will be a drop-off spot at the end of the Upper School drop-off line, near the bike racks. You will be able to drop these materials off there at any time. Before January 23rd, please contact Allison Tierney at atierney427@gmail.com to arrange to drop off your boxes.
All-School PA Meeting: Monday, Jan. 23, 7:00 pm

January 23 PA Meeting Topic: ‘Of the Best Sort but Plain’: An Exploration of Quaker Aesthetics in American Art and Architecture.

Please join Sidwell Friends parent and art historian Amy Henderson for a discussion of Quaker aesthetics in the new Upper School Meeting House on Monday, January 23, from 7:00-9:00 pm. Through a visual survey of Quaker material culture -- from such everyday objects as clothing, furniture, and silver to paintings, quilts and architecture -- Henderson will explore the many ways in which Friends throughout American history have used objects to communicate, as well as navigate, Quaker values. She will discuss what constitutes a shared Quaker aesthetic and how such an aesthetic has changed over time and place.
Wondering what to do with all of the post-Holiday Shopping Bags?

The Next to New Sale chairs are always looking for great ways to "Reuse, Renew, and Recycle" and even though our annual sale just took place in October, we're already looking forward to next year. You can help by bringing your extra shopping bags to the Upper School where we will be collecting them beginning Tuesday, January 24, through Tuesday, February 28 (collection box located outside Susannah Parker's office). We need department store bags, paper grocery bags, reusable cloth bags, Ikea bags, etc - we'll take any undamaged, non-plastic, shopping bags with handles. In addition to using them for the 2012 Next to New Sale, we'll be sharing some with Martha's Table so that families in need can take home donated clothing in nice bags rather than plastic bags. LET YOUR LIFE SPEAK: a Celebration of Stories with Vertical Voices Playback Theatre

Vertical Voices Playback Theatre honors the human experience by bringing personal stories to life on the stage in a performance on Friday, January 27 at 7:30 pm at the 37th Street Middle School Drama Studio at Sidwell Friends School. Vertical Voices Playback Theatre is a troupe of committed student actors that replays stories on-the-spot in front of the audience. Reservations are recommended -- call: 202/537-8150. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted for a Playback Theatre service learning project at the Milton Hershey School in May.
