Message from Lee

Tomorrow, Thursday, February 16, at 7:30 AM in the Dining Room, there will be an Upper School Parent Conversation with Anne Renninger and me. The focus will be Athletics, Physical Education, Health & Wellness.

Each year the Upper School Black Student Union takes a lead in a school-wide performance in honor of Black History Month. This year’s Black History Show, directed by alumna Pilar Lynch, is titled “American Dreamin.” It explores both the gap between the American dream and the American reality and how to bridge it. The show will be performed for Upper School students during collection today and then there will be a performance this Friday, February 17 at 7:00 PM to which all are welcome and no tickets are required.

The course selection process for school year 2012/2013 will begin next Wednesday, February 22, with a presentation of next year’s curriculum at collection for the students and at 7:00 PM in the Meeting Room for Upper School parents.

As follow-up to this year’s speakers -- Dr. James Maas (sleep) and Dr. Ken Ginsburg (resiliency) -- we have received good feedback with regard to their topics. Please know that the content of both of these talks is part of an ongoing discussion at school among faculty, administrators and students as well as with members of the Community Health Initiative. Community Service Family Project

The SFS community is invited to work with Behrend Builders of the DCJCC, at The Community for Creative Non-Violence (CCNV) located at 425 Mitch Snyder Place (2nd. Street) NW, Washington DC 20001 (Judiciary Square Metro). We will work under the supervision of the staff of Behrend Builders to refurnish this shelter for the homeless by painting and making minor repairs. Behrend Builders will provide all necessary tools and materials. We encourage you to donate your time and efforts to this worthwhile project on Sunday March 4, 10 am - 2 pm. This service project is suitable for ages 13 and up, and we will be able to take 25 volunteers. For more information and/or to volunteer, please contact June Das Gupta by Wednesday February 29. 10th Grade Service Project: Casserole Bake for the Homeless

The Casserole Bake will take place in the Upper School Dining Room on Sunday February 26th from noon until 2 pm. 10th graders and their families will prepare 50 casseroles for delivery to Martha's Table and Thrive DC. Thanks to those families who have already volunteered to donate ingredients and to come and help.

We need many more volunteers to donate non-perishable ingredients for the casseroles. Ingredients should be delivered to David Connell's office, Room 222 in the Upper School BY WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 22nd. Ingredients still needed include canned black beans, corn and diced tomatoes, jars of mild salsa and marinara sauce and ziti pasta.

Pennies for Patients

During the month of February, Ms. Brownlee's advisory is leading its fourth annual "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society program that helps collect important funds for blood cancer patients. Simply by collecting and donating pennies, the research on and patient services for blood cancers increases, and more patients are able to have effective treatment. Last year, students in the DC metropolitan area raised $700,000 to fight blood cancer and provide services for patients and their families.

SFS Playback Theatre

The latest SFS Playback Theatre performance features both Middle and Upper School students, as well as Synergy in Action Playback Theatre Company from Silver Spring, MD. The three groups will combine troupes to perform for INTERSECTIONS: A New America Arts Festival at The Atlas Performing Arts Center, on Sat., February 25 at 11 a.m.

Sidwell Friends hosted the inaugural National Capital Erg Invitational on Sunday February 12. The Sidwell Friends Rowing Team wishes to thank all members of the community and all participants for making this a terrific success. Nearly 200 people showed up to row (including Head of School Tom Farquhar). Four area high schools sent most of their teams, two local rowing clubs also showed up in force and a world record was broken—master rower Jill Gardner (60) set a new world record in the women’s 60-69 division (for complete results for all rowers visit NationalCapitalErg.org). Her encouraging words to the girls: "Row, because it's a great sport!"
The team and their parents could not have hoped for a more successful start to this new event, and thank all of you who helped out in so many ways, and especially to the school for graciously offering the athletic center as the venue. We are already looking forward to next year, and hope to see you all there!
