This week's assembly will be according to grade level: 5/6 students will see author Roseanne Parry; 7th graders will hear Head of School Tom Farquhar speaking about Quakerism; and 8th will hear about Upper School arts choices.

We have begun our winter food drive to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank and A Wider Circle. A shopping list is attached; we hope that students will participate in the shopping of food items to donate to our drive. Let's have 100% participation!

Thanks to everyone who brought in their extra toiletries. These have been donated to the Betty Ann Krahnke Shelter for victims of domestic violence. The facility houses 54 beds for women and their children who are fleeing domestic violence in Montgomery County .

The second trimester for Middle School ends this Friday. A reminder that next Friday, March 2nd, is a report-writing day, so there will not be school for our students. Reports will be posted some time during the week of March 12th. The winter sports season also ends this Friday.

All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students will participate in the Maryland Math League contest next Tuesday. This half-hour written activity is a competition among students in both public and private schools in the area.

Some friendly reminders for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from our technology department:
Software Downloads must be approved in advance. The Software Download Request Form can be found on the MS Laptop Program page on our school website. Approval is not required for printer drivers, browser upgrades, or parental monitoring software.

Students should keep their laptops secure when not in use. Laptops should not be left unattended on the benches in the hallways-they should be in a student's classroom cubby or in their lockers.

A Look Ahead... All students will turn in their school-issued laptops at the end of the school year. Please keep in mind that in order for a student's report card to be released, all items issued to the student in September (laptop, laptop bag, power adapter/cord, and laptop battery) must be returned, or if lost, must be paid for. Turn-in dates will be shared as we get closer to the end of the third trimester.

Finally, a reminder to students that homework needs to be printed at home, or that students need to arrive before 8 AM and take care of their printing here at school. Teachers will not hold up the class while students print out their assignments. Also, students will no longer be able to use the color printer unless they get specific permission from a teacher. We are trying to cut down on waste - there were 18,000 color copies made in the technology lab in the month of January alone.

Will your family be in town during spring break? The Giver is a perennial favorite book for our sixth graders, and the Round House theate is performing the play. We would have loved to have taken students there on a trip, but it falls exactly during our break. If you're in town, your family might enjoy attending.

Pennies for Patients

During the month of February, Ms. Brownlee's advisory is leading its fourth annual "Pennies for Patients" fundraiser, a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society program that helps collect important funds for blood cancer patients. Simply by collecting and donating pennies, the research on and patient services for blood cancers increases, and more patients are able to have effective treatment. Last year, students in the DC metropolitan area raised $700,000 to fight blood cancer and provide services for patients and their families. There are collection boxes in the main offices of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Schools, as well as in Zartman House and the Fox Den. Middle School Teacher Appreciation Lunch

We are looking for parent volunteers to help set up and/or clean-up after the Middle School Teacher Appreciation Lunch on Wednesday, February 22nd. We also are still in need of food items. MS PA Diversity Committee
