Smith Meeting House, Ken Ginsburg, MD will be speaking to parents about raising successful children and building resilience. Dr. Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in Adolescent Medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The theme that ties together his clinical practice, teaching, research and advocacy efforts is that of building on the strength of teenagers by fostering their internal resilience. He works to translate the best of what is known from research and practice into practical approaches parents, professionals and communities can use to build resilience. If you have an any questions about the program, please email Gaby Grebski, US Counselor, at grebskig@sidwell.edu. The PA Arts Committee would like to thank in this public forum the many individuals who helped bring our SFS community together, and, in addition, welcome a visiting community, on Sunday afternoon - all in celebration of the arts. First, a huge thank you to the performers who stepped into the limelight to share their talents and to the parents who helped to bring that talent to the right place at the right time. Another GARGANTUAN thank you goes to the arts faculty from the lower, middle, and upper schools for their active participation and leadership, providing opportunities to try out activities that many children have never tried before. We also send out an especially LOUD thank you to the many parent volunteers who stepped into the chaos to bring a measure of control. THANK YOU one and all for helping to bring ArtRageous 2012 to full bloom. LinkedIn Group Would you like to connect with other Sidwell Friends parents on LinkedIn? The Parents Association would like to invite you to connect with other SFS parents and staff on LinkedIn, the online social media network for professionals. We have created a LinkedIn Group exclusively for current parents, faculty and staff. Membership is optional and limited to members of our school community. We have created this group to help members of our community get to know each other better, participate in discussions, and share resources. Information and instructions for joining this site can be found here. Wondering what to do with all of the post-Holiday Shopping Bags? The Next to New Sale chairs are always looking for great ways to "Reuse, Renew, and Recycle" and even though our annual sale just took place in October, we're already looking forward to next year. You can help by bringing your extra shopping bags to the Upper School where we will be collecting them beginning Tuesday, January 24, through Tuesday, February 28 (collection box located outside Susannah Parker's office). We need department store bags, paper grocery bags, reusable cloth bags, Ikea bags, etc - we'll take any undamaged, non-plastic, shopping bags with handles. In addition to using them for the 2012 Next to New Sale, we'll be sharing some with Martha's Table so that families in need can take home donated clothing in nice bags rather than plastic bags. For more Information, contact Anne Honn, Next to New Sale co-chair, at anhonn@gmail.com. Other News Quaker Quotes "The primary purpose of the Meeting House is to serve as the place of shared reflection for Upper and Middle School students and their teachers. At other times, the Meeting House can -- and should --provide a dynamic forum for families, alumni, neighbors, Quaker and community organizations, and student groups from elsewhere in the City and beyond -- to actively participate in dialogue and reflection hosted by the School that promote Quaker values of peace and reconciliation, social justice and service to others. The establishment of a broad-ranging "Quaker Conversation" that enables members of our extended community to share their knowledge and experience, and that roots Quaker testimonies in the examination of real world hardships, can give voice to our students as they discover what it means to "let your life speak." More than anything else, we see this Quaker Conversation as at the heart of Sidwell Friends' commitment to lifelong learning and action." from "The SFS 2025 Challenge: Long Range Priorities" Quaker Quotes is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman (melissa@ecologicflooring.com, Holly Moore (htmoore@gmail.com) and Cynthia Terrell (ctcabin@gmail.com). We welcome ideas Support Sidwell Rowing: Sign Up for Inaugural Fundraiser Today (before prices go up)! The First Annual National Capital Erg Invitational "Erg, PLay, Love" on Sunday February 12 (9am to 4pm in the Athletic Center) is the Rowing Team's big push to re-tool the major fundraising needs of this all girls club sport. Car washes and bake sales have their place, but this event is something completely different. If you were a rower in a past life, you know what we mean! If you have no idea what we are talking about, it is basically a crew regatta, but inside, on rowing machines. It is an all day experience, but you can dive in for any part of it, with the more serious races in the morning, and the more "social" races in the afternoon, involving teams and relays. The ergs (rowing machines) are connected to each other to enable multi-person teams, but also are used individually for direct competitions. You don't need to be there all day, just for the races you signed up for, but of course, it will be fun to hang out, watch the competitors, chat with your friends, buy some homemade and home-baked goods and feel great about getting your workout done in a social way, all while supporting your friends who row on the team. Please help this kick-off annual fundraiser be an outstanding success! The SFS Rowing Team and support staff (aka parents) have been working industriously to learn the complicated ropes of putting on such an event, and we need all of you to join the energy of the day. More information and sign-up forms are on the website. Register today at www.NationalCapitalErg.org and invite your friends, your children, your parents to do it with you. Note: Registration fees increase by 25% after February 1, so do it now!! US Wednesday Newsletter Information How to Submit an Article to the Wednesday Letter.
