[http://www.usglc.org/downloads/2015/09/usglc-logo.jpg] May 25, 2016 Dear Board of Directors, Thank you to everyone who participated in a very thoughtful discussion yesterday. Your input was extremely helpful to our team as we maneuver through this challenging political environment and prepare for the upcoming budget season. I thought our three outside guests were outstanding - Chairman Royce, Tom Nides, and Haley Barbour. [http://www.usglc.org/downloads/2016/05/may-2016-board-image.jpg] A special thank you to our Co-Chairs - Carolyn, Sarah and Dan - for their support in putting our meeting together, and to our Vice Chairs - Andrew and Karl - for taking on our Strategic Visioning initiative. Of course, a big shout out to my colleagues who did an extraordinary job to create, organize, and present a first-class meeting. Moving forward there is much to do. Let me summarize for those who were and weren't there the next steps and a few items to keep on your radar screen: 1. Important Dates. At the Board meeting, we discussed several events you should have on your calendars. To make it easier, here they are - all in one place. State Leaders Summit - June 13: * Please join us as we bring together nearly 500 of our State Leaders at the Grand Hyatt, featuring General David Petraeus and Meet the Press host Chuck Todd. * My personal favorite will be an all-star roundtable with the women who run the International Affairs agencies - Gayle Smith (USAID), Dana Hyde (MCC), Carrie Radelet (Peace Corps), Lee Zak (TDA) and Elizabeth Littlefield (OPIC) and possibly Heather Higginbottom from the State Department. * It will be great to have you join us in the green room to greet the speakers, and of course at our reception on Capitol Hill the next day. * Here is the most current agenda<http://usglc.org/downloads/2016/05/2016-Summit-Agenda.pdf>. Let Emily Benovitz<mailto:ebenovitz@usglc.org> know if you plan to come for any part of the day. USGLC at Conventions - July: * We will be hosting policy forums at both conventions - Republicans in Cleveland the week of July 18 and the Democrats in Philadelphia the week of July 25. * Please let Emily Benovitz<mailto:ebenovitz@usglc.org> know if you or any of your colleagues will be attending either convention so we can send invitations to our events. Fall Board of Directors Meeting - September 14 & 15 Impact 2016 Fall Events - Please join us: * Columbus, Ohio - September 28 featuring Secretary Bob Gates * Miami, Florida and Richmond, Virginia - TBD Tribute Dinner: Week of December 7 2. Strategic Visioning Next Steps. Watch for a follow up memo from Andrew and Karl with more details. In the meantime, thank you for those that signed up for one of the three Working Groups that will meet via conference over the summer, responsible for developing recommendations. As a reminder, the topics include: * Strengthening Policy Support * Demonstrating Political Support * Amplifying the Story 3. Board Task Forces. We agreed we needed a few short-term efforts, including: * Long-term Budget Task Force: Will be led by Jeff Colman and Lindsay Plack * Review of USGLC Dues Task Force: Will be led by Karl Hoffman and Melissa Lieberman * A conference call will be set shortly for those that expressed interest. 4. Additional USGLC Focus. I will keep you posted on our work on Capitol Hill, our state activities, and of course our Presidential and Congressional candidate outreach. I do want to hear your ideas and thoughts so please continue to email me: * Who do you think are potential VP and Cabinet potential picks on the D and R side? I want to make sure we are engaging the right people. * Who do you think are the best anchor guests for our Plum Book salon events? We need more ideas this year since our traditional names are more challenging. * Are you are willing to travel and speak around the country for us? If so, where and what topic? Lastly, if you are interested in learning more about our upcoming launch of our Global Impact Project - our new "telling your story" platform - please be in touch with Melissa<mailto:mlieberman@usglc.org>. Enjoy the holiday weekend and I hope to see you at our Summit in June. Many thanks for your time and support. Liz Liz Schrayer, USGLC
