Gala Raises $ 2 Million Dollars!

On Saturday, April 30, more than 1,000 friends and supporters of Catholic Charities came together to celebrate at our Catholic Charities Gala. We've had a lot to celebrate in the past year: Pope Francis' visit, an unprecedented capital campaign, 120,000 men, women, and children served and so much more.The2016 Catholic Charities Gala, led by gala chair, James V. Reyes,added another moment to celebrate; this year's gala raised more than $ 2 million <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fbit.ly%2f1Tt2lMu&srcid=29974&srctid=1&erid=1502454&trid=58985b5f-723f-48f1-84ab-e280fee9049d> for our 83 programs and clients in the Archdiocese of Washington. Thank you to everyone who made this night successful and continue to support our work in the community every day!

A Special Meal for a Special Volunteer

When Komi, one of the best restaurants in DC, donated a gift card to Catholic Charities as their #WalkwithFrancis pledge, we knew we had to put it to good use. As part of Volunteer Appreciation Month, we presented the gift card <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.instagram.com%2fp%2fBEtKjJfgB4D%2f%3ftaken-by%3dccadw&srcid=29974&srctid=1&erid=1502454&trid=58985b5f-723f-48f1-84ab-e280fee9049d> to one of our dedicated volunteers,Joe (pictured top right). Two days a week, every week, Joe volunteers his time focusing on a huge task: making our housing programs more welcoming and safe. "Every once in a while, someone comes to us to volunteer who brings some extraordinary skills we can benefit from," said Father John. "Joe is the prototype volunteer in our diocese who have agreed to Walk with Francis." Thank you to Joe for your impact and thank to the 8,400 volunteers who donated their time to us this year!

120 High School Students
Give Back to the Community

The forecast called for freezing temperatures and a rare April snowfall but that didn't stop 120 high school students from volunteering on our High School Day of Service. Students from local schools gathered at our 801 East Men's shelter in the early morning to spruce up the interior of the shelter, plant flower gardens, and pack breakfast bags for the men staying in the shelter.Can't wait to have many of these student volunteers back this summer!

Daily Do-Good

Earlier this month, the 2016 Cherry Blossom Princesses visited the students at our Kennedy School. A tradition for more than a decade, the students always look forward to meeting the princesses and planting a cherry blossom tree in the school yard. Raheem DeVaughn, the Grammy nominated local D.C. legend (and R&B singer) hosted more than 500 of our homeless clients for a Sunday afternoon of chef-cooked meals, free haircuts, and live music at our New York Avenue Shelter. Thanks to a generous grant from National Lutheran Community Services, our Southern Maryland Food Bank has expanded it's reach to senior citizens dealing with food insecurity. Every two weeks, the food bank delivers healthy snack bags to 78 senior citizens in an assisted living community.
