Dear Friends,


We have had a recent report of a locker room theft that occurred during an
Upper School PE class (cash was taken from a student’s belongings that were
in an unlocked locker). Unfortunately, even in a school setting, such
thefts occasionally occur; they appear to be thefts of opportunity focusing
on valuables left in unlocked lockers. We know how frustrating and
upsetting this is for the students who are victims of such thefts, and ask
for the cooperation of parents and students in foiling future thefts by
making sure every valuable is secured in a locked locker.


Although we do have cameras in the Athletic Center Building and the hallway
by the locker rooms, given privacy considerations we cannot use cameras to
monitor what goes on inside the locker room itself. A school security
guard makes spot checks of the locker room after school, and the guards
have observed that a substantial number of lockers are left unlocked each
day.


To review our current locker policy, all Middle School students who take PE
have an assigned locker for the year and are required at the beginning of
the year to bring a combination lock. If a student can no longer access
his/her locker because he has forgotten the combination, the student should
notify a member of the PE/Athletics staff and they can look up the
combination for the student. All Upper School students participating in
PE/Athletics are allowed to have a locker for each season; once they choose
a locker they are required to report the locker number and combination to
Megan Miller (for the girls) and Chan Cho (for the boys). Because large
items like bookbags do not fit in the lockers, we suggest that Upper School
students lock up their valuables (phones/money/electronics) during
PE/Athletics while leaving their bookbags in the Upper School building.


Please help us in this effort by reminding our students to make a habit of
locking their locker to protect their valuables.
