** Tackling the Grand Challenges in Global Health

Monday, Nov. 12: Dr. Daar, Chief Science and Ethics Officer at Grand Challenges Canada and Professor of Public Health Sciences and of Surgery at the University of Toronto, will discuss the grand challenges in global health and the innovative approaches to tackling them. The medical and life science fields have experienced breakthrough changes at an astounding pace in recent decades. However, research funding and incentives’ overwhelming focus on Western medical needs mean that many of the developing world’s most pressing health challenges are still inadequately addressed. How do we address global health inequities by closing the “lab to village” gap?. Why is the Grand Challenges Canada approach considered so innovative? ** Lunch with a Leader: Major General Maggie Woodward

Thursday, Nov. 15: Maj. Gen. Margaret H. Woodward is currently the Air Force Chief of Safety at U.S. Air Force Headquarters in Washington, DC, and Commander of the Air Force Safety Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. Just prior to this position, she was stationed in Germany where she served as Commander of the 17th Air Force and US Air Forces Africa. In this capacity she commanded the international coalition in Operation Odyssey Dawn, the Libyan intervention that led to the fall of Qaddafi's regime. ** Lebanon in the Shadow of Syrian Civil War

Friday, Nov. 16: The car bombing that killed Lebanese security chief Wissam al-Hasan last month has raised new concerns that Lebanon is being increasingly drawn into the Syrian civil war. Indeed, predictions that Lebanon would descend into sectarian violence as a result of the Syrian uprising have abounded since the beginning of that conflict. Yet, Lebanon—once a byword for religious civil war—has managed so far to avoid that catastrophic scenario. Irina Papkova, a Berkley Center research fellow who now living in Beirut, will address the current political situation in Lebanon and the threats and challenges facing its leaders in the shadow of the Syrian conflict.
