Tuesday - October 2, 2012 From the School This Week's Query This week’s query: What is important to build a strong community at SFS? Notes from Sally Our assembly visitors this Friday will be a group of Lakota Pine Ridge Reservation Drummers, Singers, Dancers and Elders. This program will be held in the Meeting House at 2:45 on Friday. 5/6 Math Club begins today right after school and will meet each Tuesday from 2:00 – 2:30. Back to School Night is Thursday night. The evening will begin with food and check-in in the courtyard outside the Meeting House. A schedule and name tag will be available for each parent. The general meeting begins in the Meeting Room at 6 PM; parents may bring food in to the Meeting Room (but remember to take out your trash!) Parents who arrive after the general meeting is over should come to the Middle School office to pick up their schedule and nametag. Bring contributions to the food drive to the Meeting House. You are also welcome to send in contributions with your child any day this week; see the Community Service section for more details about the drive. Parking is available both in the garage and on 37th Street. The Middle School building will be open to access the Meeting Room. Back to School Night is also a good time to check the Lost and Found boxes on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Please remember to label your child’s belongings, especially those PE clothes! Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening, which includes pizza dinner. Please call the Middle School office no later than this Wednesday, October 3, to sign up for child care. Students should be dropped off at the Wannan Gym, next to the Middle School playground. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end around 8:15 p.m. for 5th grade and around 8:35 p.m. for 6th, 7th, and 8th, and students may be picked up in the Dining Room. I hope you are beginning to make use of Haiku if you are interested in seeing your child’s assignments. If you cannot see them, please do let us know. Any tech issues may be reported by sending an email to MS_Help@sidwell.edu. 7/8 parents: are you struggling to keep up with the athletic schedule for your child’s team? Sync school calendars and team schedules with your electronic calendar via iCalendar feeds! Log in to the Parent Portal and click on iCalendar feeds (upper right). New this school year, you can select the specific calendar categories you want to create a single, easy-to-manage feed. You can also choose all of the teams you want to follow and create a single feed for game schedules. Please note that we recommend subscribing to the iCalendar feeds so you will get the latest information on cancellations and room changes. (If you just download the calendar, the information is only as current as the day you download it.) If you have any questions, contact webmaster@sidwell.edu. CHI meetings are starting again next week. We invite all 6th grade parents to join us for a light dinner and conversation with Middle School Counselor Michelle Parker and me on Wednesday evening, October 10th in the Middle School Drama Studio. Dinner at 6:45; the meeting begins at 7:30. Eighth grade parents, your CHI evening is the following week, October 17th, at 7:30 PM. All 7/8 students will be out for their second service day next Thursday, October 11th. Look for a permission slip and information from your child’s advisor. Things are hopping in Middle School! After-school activities are now in full swing, tours of the green building have begin, the rooftop garden boxes have their first plantings, and life is busy and full. We look forward to seeing you all on Thursday night! PA Announcements PA Parent Peer Group Facilitator Training Sessions Sidwell Friends has a long tradition of grade-wide peer groups. These meetings were created to provide an opportunity for parents to discuss issues of relevance to our children in a safe and intimate environment. They are for parents only and are facilitated by parents from the class. We have an urgent need for facilitators to run our Parent Peer Group meetings this year! No prior experience necessary! We’re even offering the choice of two training sessions available on both campuses: Session1: October 26th: 8:00am – 9:30am in the Rusch Team Room (formerly called the Athletics Center Meeting Room) Session 2: November 2nd: 8:30am – 9:45am in Lower School Quaker Meetinghouse These sessions will offer guidelines on how to effectively steer discussions without bias and suggest procedures to follow when running a Parent Peer Group Meeting. These sessions are open to all Parents. All it will take is one session for you to have all the tools you need to facilitate a meeting. Please join us! Contact Kathi Webb kathiwebb58@gmail.com, Susan Maniatis susan.maniatis@gmail.com or, Adrienne Chen-Young adreene@aol.com, for further details. Potluck Hosts Needed! It is time, once again, for one of Sidwell Friends' most beloved traditions. This year's fall potlucks will be held on the weekends of Oct 27-28, Nov 2-4, and Nov 10-11. If you are interested in hosting a potluck for parents in your child's class/team, please contact Anne Conlee Mazlish (aconlish@aol.com) or Fatim Haidara (fatim.haidara@intelsat.com). Quaker Life Committee: Exploring the Idea of Silence The LS Quaker Life Committee invites parents and the Sidwell Friends School community to join us on Tuesday, October 2 (LS Meeting House, 7:00-9:00 pm) for our first reading group of the year. We will explore the idea of silence with such queries as: How are children taught the practice of silence? How do they make it their own? What are its benefits in terms of improved learning and communication? How can adults make space for quiet, open time in children and families' lives?? We will open the discussion using chapter one of Robert Lawrence Smith’s A Quaker Book of Wisdom, and if you are interested in receiving a copy of the book, please contact Amy Henderson at msausten@mac.com (the QLC has 20 copies to distribute). PDF copies of our selected readings are now available on the Quaker Life Committee page of the Parents’ Portal here. If you are able to attend this event, please RSVP to Emily Grossi (emgrossi@gmail.com) by the morning of October 2, 2012. We hope you will be able to join us! Join the SFS Parents Group on LinkedIn The Parents Association would like to invite you to join the more than 200 Sidwell Friends parents and staff in the SFS Parents LinkedIn Group. We have created a LinkedIn Group exclusively for current parents, faculty and staff to help members of our community get to know each other better, participate in discussions, and share resources. If you are already a member of LinkedIn, you can join the group now by searching for "Sidwell Friends Parents" under the Group search function, clicking on the group name and then submitting a request to join from the Group profile page. If you are not currently on LinkedIn, you can set up a LinkedIn profile for free, and then request to join. Membership is optional and only open to qualifying members of the Sidwell Friends community. Questions? Contact Alex Inman (inmana@sidwell.edu) or Gus Bessalel (gbessalel@verizon.net). Or better yet, connect with us on LinkedIn! The light can come from all sides. The joy of experiencing the light in a completely different way than one has thought it would come is one of the greatest gifts that Friends' meeting for worship has brought me." Ursala Franklin, 1979 "Quaker Quotes” is a weekly submission by Melissa Belman, melissa@ecologicflooring.com, Holly Moore, htmoore@gmail.com, and Cynthia Terrell, ctcabin@gmail.com.
