Notes from Sally

The Improv Troupe from American University, Mission Improv-able, will perform at this week's Friday assembly.

Reminder: Middle School dismisses at 11:45 a.m. today for the continuation of parent conferences. All students will be served lunch before dismissal.

7th and 8th graders have their first dance of the year next Friday, October 26th. The dance will be held in the Dining Room from 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Parents are invited to attend the concurrent Peer Group meetings. Drop-off and pick-up are in the garage, and the regular school dress code applies, although students may also wear appropriate costumes. Students should bring a bag of change as an "admission" price to support Trick or Treat for UNICEF or a food item for A Wider Circle.

The Sidwell Friends Middle School Debate team will have its first of five debate tournaments on Saturday, October 27 here at Sidwell Friends School. The tournament, hosted by SFS and the DC Urban Debate League, will take place in the Upper School and will run from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m. All are invited, so please come and support your Middle School Debate team.

CHI meetings have ended, but you still have a chance to discuss these growing-up years with other parents. Each grade level has an upcoming peer group meeting, and morning Conversations with Michelle begin on Friday, November 2nd. Please make a note of these dates and join in if you can:

Peer Groups:
7th and 8th grade - this Friday night, during the dance (7th in the Middle School Library; 8th in Zartman Drawing Room)
5th grade - November 5th
6th grade - November 13th

Conversations with Michelle:
5th grade - November 2nd
6th grade - November 15th
7th grade - November 16th
8th grade was scheduled for the morning of November 9th, but since that is the morning after the Upper School meeting, we will reschedule that program.

A reminder to students in AfterCare to be sure that they check in promptly after school!

Congratulations to our team of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade mathletes, who convincingly won the first math meet of the year last week at St. Albans, beating over 10 other area independent schools by achieving the highest team score. High scorers at the meet included 7th grader Anders Brodnax and 8th graders Casey Dorfman, Imran Hossain, Jason Souvaliotis, and Alan Zhang. The remaining two math meets of the year will take place on January 30th and April 18th, and will be open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders.

To all Middle School Parents: Your kids did a great job during the evacuation of the building last Thursday, clearing the Middle School quickly and quietly. We will be conducting a thorough review of our procedures with this experience under our belts, and I welcome any suggestions you may have to help us manage these unexpected occurrences better! I also invite you to let us know if students are harboring any anxieties about the situation; Middle School Counselor Michelle Parker would be happy to check in with them.

Guidelines and Etiquette for Use of Garage

-Please be respectful and patient, and always model responsible driving behavior for our students.

-Pull as far forward as you can to allow others to drop off or pick up behind you. Pull to the right so that other cars can easily pass on the left.

-Encourage students to exit quickly from the car upon arrival. If they need to sort through bags, etc., proceed to a parking space. Students should only exit on the curb side of the vehicle.

-Proceed forward once students are out of the car. Do not pause to check your phone messages.

-Keep the pedestrian cross-walk clear of vehicles at all times.

-Turn off your car while waiting. Sidwell Friends School is an "idle-free" campus.

-Refrain from using a cell phone (hands-free or not) at all times while driving on campus.

Sidwell Friends has a long tradition of grade-wide peer groups. These meetings were created to provide an opportunity for parents to discuss issues of relevance to our children in a safe and intimate environment. They are for parents only and are facilitated by parents from the class. We have an urgent need for facilitators to run our Parent Peer Group meetings this year! No prior experience is necessary and you can attend one of two training sessions available on both campuses:
Session 1: October 26: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. in the Rusch Team Room (formerly called the Athletics Center Meeting Room)
Session 2: November 2: 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. in Lower School Quaker Meetinghouse

These sessions will offer guidelines on how to effectively steer discussions without bias and suggest procedures to follow when running a Parent Peer Group Meeting. These sessions are open to all parents. It just takes one session for you to have all the tools necessary to facilitate a meeting. Please join us! Fair Share Announces New 90 for 90 Challenge


The Fair Share Fund is excited to announce the 90 for 90 Challenge! With 90 percent parent commitments by December 31, 2012, the school will receive an additional $90,000.

What does $90,000 mean to the students? Here are just two examples:
-$90,000 pays for almost all the organic and locally sourced food served in our cafeterias.
-$90,000 covers the tutoring grants for financial aid recipients.

Parent volunteers will be making calls starting this week. Please make your gift or pledge by December 31. Next-to-New Sale Results

Thank you for making the 2012 Next-to-New Sale a resounding success. We surpassed last year's total by over $2,000, raising $68,678.35 for financial aid! That is a remarkable amount when you figure that most items average around one dollar. Thank you to our donors and shoppers - we hope you found some treasures at the sale. Lastly, the sale couldn't happen without the dedication of the volunteers, especially the section heads, vice-chairs, and co-chairs. Thank you so much for your hard work and enthusiasm. 2013 Auction Committee Kick-Off Meeting

Rubenstein Gallery Opening and Lecture

Join us in the Kogod Arts Center on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. as we honor the 2012 Daryl Reich Rubenstein Memorial Guest Artist G. Byron Peck, founder and artistic director of City Arts, a Washington, D.C. nonprofit organization that creates large-scale public artworks with the assistance of talented student artists from around the district. The exhibition runs October 23 - November 19. Free admission and open to the public.

All Middle School Halloween Candy Collection
What do you do with that extra Halloween Candy? There will be Halloween candy collection boxes at the main entrances to the Middle School for a few days following Halloween. As in the past, candy will be donated to our neighbors at The Washington Home.
