6th Grade Wellness LetterMinimester Handbook 2012
Instead of a Friday assembly this week, all Middle School students will attend a performance of the fall play, "Frindle." There are also public performances on Friday night and Saturday afternoon - all are welcome! (More information is provided later in the letter.)

Eighth grade parents are invited to a meeting about the Upper School on Thursday, November 8th at 7:45 a.m. in the Choral Room. This room is in the same building as the Meeting Room, just down the hall.

Winter sports began yesterday. Remember to have your child bring in sweatpants and a sweatshirt for the cold weather. If they are in swimming, please remember that they need to wear a hat over wet hair!

All 5th and 6th graders will rotate through health class during the winter season. There is a Health page in Haiku, to which parents have access, that contains information about the content of the course, and an information letter is attached to this Tuesday Letter for 6th grade parents, whose children will rotate in first. If you have questions about the program, please contact our school nurse, Jasmin Whitfield.

The first trimester ends at the end of next week, November 16th, and there may be trimester tests for 7th and 8th graders next week. Schedules of special classes will change for 5th and 6th graders, and arts classes will change for 7th graders beginning on Monday, November 19th. First trimester reports will be issued before winter break.

We are looking for students who are interested in tutoring at Hearst School across the street. They would love to have our students on Monday and/or Thursday afternoons, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Students should let me know if they would like to be part of this program. Let's have a good turnout again this year!

Please be sure that all UNICEF money and Halloween candy come in by the end of the week.

Just a reminder to all parents that students' cell phones must be turned off and put away during the school day. If you need to send a message to your child, please call the office and we will be happy to relay the information.

Parents of 7th and 8th grade students are invited to a meeting about Minimester trips next Monday, November 12th at 7:30 p.m. This is an optional meeting that gives parents a chance to hear more about the trips program. Booklets with trip details will be distributed to students by the middle of this week. For some parents, this will be your first encounter with the Minimester program, so I have attached LAST YEAR's full Minimester booklet to give you an idea of the program and the types of options that students will have. This year's booklet will be published in January, but students who are traveling will need to make their choices by the end of the month. Priority for travel will go to 8th graders, but there may be spaces for some 7th graders on the trips. Remember that financial assistance is available for trips!

Middle School Production of "Frindle" this Weekend

A Pen is no longer a “Pen”- It’s a “Frindle”!
SFS Middle School Presents: Bill Massolia’s adaptation of Andrew Clements’ book “Frindle.”

Nobody likes homework - do they?! 5th grader Niki Allen (the most devious kid at Lincoln Elementary) sure doesn’t. A plan to stop her teacher, Mrs. Granger, from giving her any more homework backfires, and Niki must prepare an oral report on “Words and Their Origins” for the class. This sparks the idea of making up a new word - a pen is no longer a pen; it’s a “Frindle”! Unfortunately, Niki’s fun with words draws unwelcome attention from Mrs. Granger, Niki’s parents, and school authorities. Use of the word “Frindle” spreads throughout the country like wildfire, and Niki is locked in a battle with Mrs. Granger as to which word will dominate. Who will win the battle?

Free public performances will be held on Friday, November 9th at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 10th at 2:00 p.m. in the Middle School Drama Studio. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended by calling 202-537-8150.

Visit the SFS Book Fair this Weekend at Politics & Prose

Celebrate the Sidwell Friends community’s love of reading this weekend by attending the annual Book Fair. Join us on Saturday, November 10th and Sunday, November 11th from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. at Politics & Prose (5015 Connecticut Ave NW).

Middle School Halloween Candy Collection:
What do you do with that extra Halloween Candy? There will be candy collection boxes at the main entrances to the Middle School for a few more days. Bring in your extra candy by this Friday, November 9th. As in the past, candy will be donated to our neighbors at the The Washington Home.
