Instead of an assembly this week, we will have a demonstration of the Earth Dome, a large inflated replica of the earth. Students will rotate in for visits during the day on Friday.

We will have an All-School Meeting for Worship this Thursday morning at 8:10 in the Meeting Room. Parents are welcome to attend!

A reminder to 5th grade parents: You are invited to attend Conversations with Michelle this Friday morning in the dining room at 7:45.

7th and 8th grade parents: Mark your calendars for a meeting about Minimester trips. This will be held on Monday, November 12th at 7:30 p.m. in the Drama Studio. Look for more information in next week's Tuesday Letter.

The winter PE/sports season begins next Monday, November 5th.

We are still missing some of the pink and purple forms that went out in the August Middle School mailing. These forms provide information that we can use in case of an emergency dismissal and give permission for your children to ride in another parent's car during field trips. We will be sending forms home this week to anyone who has not returned these; please help us get those in by the end of the week. We are especially eager to have emergency dismissal information.

Also, a reminder that if you will be out of town and your children will be staying with grandparents or other caregivers, please let us know that information. We would appreciate it if you would notify the homeroom teacher or advisor, Julia Porter, and me. This helps us keep our chain of communication intact in the event of any emergency situations.

Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to the fall food drive. Mrs. McCourt's homeroom took about 120 items to A Wider Circle last week!

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 7/8 dance and the Parent Peer Groups a success on Friday evening!

The Sidwell Friends Middle School Debate team hosted the first of five tournaments of the DC Urban Debate League on October 27. There were 135 debaters on 46 teams from 11 schools. The Sidwell Friends team performed extremely well, capturing the first place trophy overall by winning 30 of the 40 debates in which they competed. Additionally, six of Sidwell's three-person teams captured six of the top ten team awards, finishing with trophies for second place (Daniel Blatt, Jordan Chernof, Jack Ellert-Beck), third place (Julian Dixon, Madeleine Montagner, Ana Mundaca), fourth place (Lucas Carvalho, Camaran Gaillard, Stefan Morgan), fifth place (Jade Lintott, Ananth Shastri, Milan Vivanco), seventh place (Toly Brevnov, Matty Cheng, Ricardo Facey), and eighth place (Harrison Blain, Jack Blazes, Jordan Kalai). In addition, there were sterling individual performances that led to medals for individual speaker points going to eight Sidwell debaters in the top twenty. Zach Mazlish topped the list by capturing first place overall! Other students receiving awards for being in the top twenty were Ananth Shastri (4th), Ana Mundaca (5th), Jordan Kalai (6th), Jade Lintott (8th), Casey Dorfman (10th), Miles Zhang (16th), and Milan Vivanco (19th). Overall, it was an outstanding performance by all the debaters! The next tournament will be held in Bowie, MD on December 8th. A big thank you to coaches Burt Nadler and Lisa Blatt!

As I write this on Monday morning we are just beginning to feel the effects of Hurricane Sandy. The School will continue to update families through Alert Now and newsflash messages, the SFS website, and the Information Hotline (202-537-8176, ext 3). Please stay safe over these next few days!

A Special Evening with John Touchton and Virginia Lum

Don't miss this unforgettable performance by Arts Department Chair John Touchton and former parent Virginia Lum! This inaugural concert will be performed on two new concert grand Steinway pianos purchased as part of Sidwell's Arts Center renovation. Two-piano, four-hands concert featuring works of J.S. Bach, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Milhaud, and Lutoslawski on Friday, November 2 at 8:00 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. Free admission and open to the public.

All Middle School Halloween Candy Collection
What do you do with that extra Halloween Candy? There will be Halloween candy collection boxes at the main entrances to the Middle School for a few days following Halloween. As in the past, candy will be donated to our neighbors at The Washington Home.
