Tuesday - October 16, 2012 From the School This Week's Query How can we take what we learn from school and apply it to the real world? Notes from Sally Our assembly visitor this week will be the Maru Montero Dance Company on Friday at 2:45 p.m. in the Kaplin Theater. This week's Northwest Current correspondent is Alex McGuire. If you routinely receive the Northwest Current and wouldn't mind passing along your copy when you're finished, I would love to have an extra copy! 8th grade parents: please join us for your CHI meeting on Wednesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the Drama Studio. Also, we're reminding 8th grade students to sign up to help sell goodies at Homecoming on Saturday; this is the fundraising opportunity for their class gift. Finally, the information meeting about Upper School has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 8 at 7:45 a.m. in the Upper School Choral Room (just behind the Meeting Room - same building.) Please mark your calendars for this first look at the Upper School. All parents are invited to join us for our All-Middle School Meeting for Worship on Thursday morning. Meeting will be in the Meeting Room from 8:10 - 8:40 a.m. Parent Conference Days are Monday and Tuesday, October 22 and 23. Please note that Middle School is closed on Monday (no SPARC Chinese class) and dismisses at 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday. Conference Days are a great time to check the Lost and Found boxes for stray belongings - they are located in the second floor lobby and the 3rd floor science wing. Reminders about Tuesday, October 23: Lunch will be served to all students before school is dismissed at 11:45 a.m. 5/6 Math Club will not meet. The Aftercare Program will be open, beginning at 12:00 noon. The shuttle to the Edgemoor Campus will NOT run until the normal Tuesday time of approximately 2:30 p.m. These options exist for students who normally ride the shuttle: Parents may pick up students at Middle School at 11:45 a.m. (Please note that Lower School dismisses at 12:15.). 7th grade students who are staying for their hangout may ride the shuttle at 2:30 p.m. Students may drop in to Aftercare. Please contact Elizabeth Kerr by Monday at 4:00 p.m. at kerre@sidwell.edu to drop in (regular aftercare participants do not need to RSVP). The drop-in charge is $15.00 for 12:00-2:30 ($40 until 6:00 p.m.). Please complete a drop-in form if you do not already have one on file (form found on MS web page). The inaugural meeting of the 5/6 A-ZSU (student diversity group) will be Tuesday, October 23 during 5/6 lunch (the half day.) At the initial meeting, students will, amongst other things, decide upon topics for the year, including discussions related to identity, diversity, community, and social justice. Students are asked to sign up ahead of time outside Ms. Saunders' classroom or in the office. If you have questions, please feel free to contact one of the group's advisors: Eliza Bright, Kimberly Clarkson, Jennifer Mitchell, or Susanne Saunders. 7th and 8th graders have their first dance of the year next Friday, October 26. The dance will be held in the Dining Room from 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Parents are invited to attend the concurrent Peer Group meetings. Drop-off and pick-up are in the garage, and the regular school dress code applies, although students may also wear appropriate costumes. Students should bring a bag of change as an "admission" price to support Trick or Treat for UNICEF or a food item for A Wider Circle. The Sidwell Friends Middle School Debate team will have its first of five debate tournaments on Saturday, October 27 here at Sidwell Friends School. The tournament, hosted by SFS and the DC Urban Debate League, will take place at the Upper School and will run from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m. All are invited, so please come and support your Middle School Debate team. Halloween is two weeks away. The fifth grade will have a modest morning celebration, and there are no other grade-wide events planned at this time. Students who choose to wear costumes should know that they may only wear costumes that do not interfere with normal functioning in the classroom. And of course, no weapons or violent themes, please. We have UNICEF boxes in the office. Please encourage your child to pick one up and collect donations for UNICEF. Thanks! The Middle School will not participate in the Help the Homeless Miniwalk Program this year. The organizational system has changed, and the process just does not work for us. We encourage you to remember our traditional Miniwalk partners in your charitable giving plans: Martha's Table http://www.marthastable.org/, Bethesda Cares http://www.bethesdacares.com/, Transitional Housing http://www.thcdc.org/, and Samaritan Inns http://www.samaritaninns.org/ Instrumental Music Notes 5/6 Concert Band - Wednesday, Rehearsal Period 7/8 String Ensemble - Wednesday, Rehearsal Period 5/6 Guitars, Harp, and Violin III - Friday, DEAR Period 7/8 Brass - Friday, Break Period Choral Notes 7/8 chorus rehearsals this week: Monday, October 15 Girls Ensemble - 3:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 17 Boys Ensemble - 7:25 a.m. AND rehearsal period Friday, October 19 8th grade Girls Ensemble members - during break (11:00 a.m.) PA Announcements Parent Peer Group Facilitator Training Sessions Sidwell Friends has a long tradition of grade-wide peer groups. These meetings were created to provide an opportunity for parents to discuss issues of relevance to our children in a safe and intimate environment. They are for parents only and are facilitated by parents from the class. We have an urgent need for facilitators to run our Parent Peer Group meetings this year! No prior experience is necessary and you can attend one of two training sessions available on both campuses: Session 1: October 26: 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. in the Rusch Team Room (formerly called the Athletics Center Meeting Room) Session 2: November 2: 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. in Lower School Quaker Meetinghouse These sessions will offer guidelines on how to effectively steer discussions without bias and suggest procedures to follow when running a Parent Peer Group Meeting. These sessions are open to all parents. It just takes one session for you to have all the tools necessary to facilitate a meeting. Please join us! Contact Kathi Webb kathiwebb58@gmail.com, Susan Maniatis susan.maniatis@gmail.com or, Adrienne Chen-Young adreene@aol.com, for further details. Parents Invited to Meeting for Worship Parents of Middle School students are invited to attend Meeting for Worship with their child on the following Thursdays, 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., in the Smith Meeting House: October 18, November 1, November 15, and December 20. For Quakers, wisdom begins in silence. This is a wonderful way for parents to experience Meeting, take part in your child's education, and demonstrate the value of silent worship. Lower School Book Fair Coming Soon! The countdown to the Lower School Book Fair is on, with so many reasons to come. Come to the Book Fair! Rubenstein Gallery Opening and Lecture Join us in the Kogod Arts Center on Tuesday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. as we honor the 2012 Daryl Reich Rubenstein Memorial Guest Artist G. Byron Peck, founder and artistic director of City Arts, a Washington, D.C. nonprofit organization that creates large-scale public artworks with the assistance of talented student artists from around the district. The exhibition runs October 23 - November 19. Free admission and open to the public. Community Service Corner Food Collection Extended until this Friday! We are in great need of pantry food items for A Wider Circle. Fall tends to be a particularly slow time for donations, and the pantry shelves are lacking! Please consider bringing in an item or two from your own pantry - no need to go to the store. Collection boxes are located in the hallway across from the MS front desk, near the Drama Studio. For a list of suggested items, click on the “Read More” link below. Topic for home discussion: For many families who come to A Wider Circle, the meals that the children eat at school on Friday are the last meals they have until the school lunch on the next Monday. Questions? Please contact MS Co-clerks Sara Jane Harris sjrharris@me.com or Felice Roggen froggen@mac.com.
