AIR WAR HEATS UP IN IOWA: Campaign Pros saw them first: As the June 3 GOP Senate primary in Iowa approaches, the air war there is heating up. Former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker is going up with his first ad, focusing on his past career as a University of Iowa football player and his time as U.S. attorney; businessman Mark Jacobs, who's already been spending heavily on the airwaves, has a new ad where his son and daughter outline a campaign "plan" for him. Here are the details:
--WHITAKER: "My Iowa story started on this field - and it continued when I played for Coach [Hayden] Fry, who taught us to always fight for Iowa," Whitaker says, as footage from his time as an Iowa tight end in the Rose Bowl plays. "As your U.S. attorney, I protected Iowa, putting thugs and predators behind bars. And as your senator, when it comes to standing up to Barack Obama, I won't waver." The ad was made by FP1 Strategies; Whitaker's campaign wouldn't disclose the size of the buy. Watch:

--JACOBS: "People should know you're a businessman, a problem solver, Iowa roots - and you've got mom," one of Jacobs' children says of the candidate. ("Suck up," one says to the other over the comment about their mom.) "You want to balance the budget, cut taxes, create jobs, get rid of dumb regulations, reduce debt and raise our allowance," they continue. Then Jacobs chimes in: "I'm Mark Jacobs and except for the allowance, I approve this message." The ad is part of a $576,000 buy between now and the June 3 primary. Watch:

SCHATZ AD FOCUSES ON GUN CONTROL: Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz is out with his latest ad, this time talking up his role in the Senate push for stricter gun laws last year. "Over 300 million guns in America - yet as President Obama said, as many as 40 percent of all gun purchases are conducted without a background check," he says. "But the two most important reasons I'm fighting for sensible gun safety laws: our kids, Tyler and Mia. In the Senate, I voted to require background checks for gun purchases, close the gun show loophole and ban assault weapons." This spot is all about speaking to the Democratic base in his primary race Schatz faces a competitive primary against Rep. Colleen Hanabusa -
and it's one of the few times you'll hear Obama invoked positively on the airwaves this spring. The ad, produced by Dixon/Davis Media Group, will run statewide on broadcast and cable. Watch:

KINGSTON KIDS CALL DAD 'CHEAP' IN NEW AD: Georgia GOP Rep. Jack Kingston's four children star in the Senate candidate's latest ad, talking about Kingston's fiscal management around the house. "He really is cheap and it's not just the car he drives," his daughter Betsy says. The other siblings chime in: "He'll drive five miles on empty, just to save two cents a gallon." "Have you seen our Tupperware collection?" "We thought 'Hand-Me-Down' was the name of a Department Store." "You know, for Dad, it's about personal responsibility and respecting the value of a dollar," one son says. "He'll be the same way in the Senate." Kingston comes on at the end to say he approves the message-"once I saw
it was under budget." The ad, "Tupperware," was produced by the Strategy Group for Media. Watch:

Why Dems should worry about ABC/Post poll
NRCC PULLS GRIMM FROM FUNDRAISER, via Campaign Pro's Elizabeth Titus: "The National Republican Congressional Committee has pulled indicted New York Rep. Michael Grimm from a high-dollar fundraiser May 21, committee spokesman Ian Prior said today. It's the first demonstration of a major threat facing Grimm as he tries to pursue reelection in the wake of 20 federal criminal charges revealed Monday: that his fundraising will dry up, even from friendly sources, and allow Democratic challenger Domenic Recchia a greater foothold in the Staten Island/Brooklyn district. The fundraiser is part of the NRCC's Patriot Program, which boosts at-risk incumbents primarily through fundraising
assistance.'
OBAMA UP SLIGHTLY IN NBC/WALL STREET JOURNAL POLL: A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll has President Obama with a 44 percent approval, up from 41 percent in March. (The president's disapproval dropped to 50 percent in April from 54 percent last month.) The poll found that despite the uptick in his overall job performance rating, he has seen a 3-point drop in his handling of foreign policy with only 38 percent of those surveyed approving, the lowest in his presidency. In NBC/WSJ's version of a generic ballot, registered voters were split evently, 45-45, on which party they want to control Congress next year.

JUDGES RULE AGAINST VOTER ID LAWS IN PA, WIS.: Democrats need all the help they can get in getting their voters to the polls this year, and voter ID laws - or lack thereof - can make a real difference. Tuesday brought good news for the party on that front in two critical states. In Pennsylvania, a commonwealth court judge declined to revisit its previous decision striking down the state's voter ID law - meaning the law could only survive if it's appealed to the state Supreme Court (
http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=bc56790c11bf96c04ba9eb80beaedbf833f28b84619f1e9eb32864523cd2c2ef

In Wisconsin, a federal district judge had similar thoughts about Wisconsin's strict photo ID law, saying it burdens poor and minority voters. While it can be appealed, Tuesday's decision likely means Wisconsin's law won't be in effect for this November's election (

CRAZY STORY OF THE DAY: In case you missed it, Democratic Rep. Alan Grayson (FL-09) accused his wife of 24 years, Lolita Grayson, of bigamy:

FOR JUNKIES: The Wesleyan Media Project breaks down outside spending so far this year - including the percentage in each race that's come from outside groups. In North Carolina's Senate race, that figure is a whopping 90 percent:

CODA - QUOTE OF THE DAY: "The uninformed opinions of a Washington, DC desk jockey who's never stepped foot in Texas couldn't be less relevant to what's actually happening on the ground." -Wendy Davis campaign manager Karin Johanson on DGA Chairman Peter Shumlin, who's also, you know, the governor of Vermont.
