Approximately 18 hours have passed since Hurricane Sandy came roaring ashore near Atlantic City. Save the Children continues to assess the damage but it’s clear that the storm was devastating, particularly to communities in New Jersey and New York. We conservatively estimate a need for $1 million for child care recovery and other services, though that number may very well climb once our assessment is complete.

We also continue to keep an eye on the other big national headline: next week’s presidential elections. Like you, we have been listening closely to what each candidate has to say. We have heard much from both President Obama and Governor Romney about building a more prosperous and more competitive nation, about creating more jobs and reducing the deficit. But we have heard very little about an issue that affects more than 46 million Americans, including 16 million children: poverty.


I have been working with a group of prominent children’s advocates—including Irwin Redlener of Children’s Health Fund, Geoff Canada of Harlem Children’s Zone, Bruce Lesley of First Focus, Michael Pettit of Every Child Matters, and Bill Shore of Share Our Strength—to shine a spotlight on the poverty crisis. We asked both candidates to share their short- and long-term plans for combatting poverty and meeting the needs of children. Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart explained President Obama’s response in a recent column (http://e2.ma/click/h9a7b/h9ytd/p7iq9). Another column (http://e2.ma/click/h9a7b/h9ytd/5zjq9) (http://e2.ma/click/h9a7b/h9ytd/lskq9), published late last week, dealt with Paul Ryan’s recent speech on poverty.


I appreciate this election's emphasis on improving the economy, but that is not mutually exclusive from reducing poverty. In fact, the Center for American Progress estimates that childhood poverty costs our nation $500 billion per year in lost economic growth, health care, and criminal justice costs. So, if we are truly serious about building a stronger America, ending childhood poverty must become part of the conversation.
