Tuesday - April 29, 2014 From the School This Week's Query When we fall and the only way out of our predicament is an unsavory, questionable decision, how can we remember integrity? Notes from Sally Assembly: Upper School Instrumental Ensembles Current sixth and seventh graders will be signing up for next year’s PE options next Tuesday during their PE classes. Parents do not need to sign off on those choices. If you have questions about the options, feel free to contact the Athletic Department. I am delighted to announce the appointment of our new Middle School Assistant Principal. Jared Givarz comes to us from Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, where he has been serving as Lower School Math and Science Coordinator. He has experience there with scheduling, curriculum development, and teacher training and professional development, and we are excited about the expertise that he will bring to us. Jared will be attending our Transition Meetings this spring and will begin work full-time in July. We are delighted to welcome him to Sidwell Friends! Let's help others get in the game! Have any old baseball gloves, bats, and helmets you don’t need anymore? Every year Major League Baseball organizes an equipment drive to provide baseball equipment to underprivileged kids who want to play baseball. This year the Washington Nationals are collecting equipment on May 18th, so bring in all of your old baseball equipment by then so we can have an equipment drive of our own! There will be bins set up in the MS lobby for collection. Congratulations to sixth grader Christin Clyburn! She is the 2014 River of Words Anacostia Watershed Prize winner. Each year, River of Words awards only one Anacostia Watershed Prize, honoring a student from the DC area, and Christin’s poem “Nowhere to Go” won the honor this year. We had a good turnout of more than 125 people for Michele Norris’s presentation on The Race Card Project on April 17th. Now we are looking forward to welcoming Congressman John Lewis next Tuesday evening. Hope to see you there! If you are a 37th Street driver, please note that the metal edge on the storm drain just south of the Washington Home driveway is very sharp. We’ve had three flat tires there in just the last week! I have spray painted it orange, and we’re working on a cone, but please be careful of that spot. Special Guest Speaker: Representative John Lewis Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the RLS QMH: 7:15-7:30 refreshments; 7:30-8:30 remarks. Representative John Lewis is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th Congressional District, serving since 1987, and is the Dean of the Georgia Congressional Delegation. He is the only living "Big Six" leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. He was instrumental in the organization of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Congressman John Lewis chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. Please join the MS PA Diversity Committee in welcoming representative John Lewis to Sidwell Friends for his presentation about his life as a young activist, the importance of political engagement, and his conviction that today’s young people can transform a society. Students are welcome to attend. Send Good Wishes to Departing Faculty and Staff Sidwell Friends has benefitted from the many gifts and talents of our faculty and staff. Please digitally sign the card to send your best wishes to those who have served for more than 20 years or are members of the Administrative Council and are departing at the end of this school year. Thanks for your support! Founders Day 2014 The rain held off and the traditions of Founders Day were in full swing at Sidwell Friends on Tuesday April 22. The Lower School bused to D.C. and met their Middle School buddies as the entire student body gathered for an address and were reminded of the School’s aspirational mission and founding 131 years ago. For more on Founders Day, click here. To view pictures from the day, click here. The case-sensitive password is Thomas1883Sidwell. PA Announcements Community Service Volunteer Day this Saturday On May 3rd come out to Sandy Spring Friends School's Farm in Olney, Maryland, about a 45 minute drive from Washington. Help out with farming tasks that are needed that day. We will send directions when you rsvp. Children from 10 and up will enjoy this activity—younger ones probably OK too, just check with me first. Sidwell Friends School has a partnership with Sandy Spring Friends that involved composting for their farm. A weekly pick up occurs from Upper School to Sandy Spring. It should be nice weather and it will be interesting to learn more about our partner school in this environmental stewardship endeavor. Please RSVP to leslierose@aol.com. Thank you, Leslie Rose, Community Service Co-Clerk with Matt Friadin Middle School Casserole Bake The 3rd Annual Middle School Casserole Bake is a week away! Thank you in advance for you help. We could not do this without you. 7th Grade Reps (Deborah, Georgiana, Michelle and Peggy) Other News Quaker Quotes From the Philadelphia Inquirer, April 24, 2014: "Education was critical to William Penn's 'Holy Experiment,' and in 1689, he had a hand in planting the seed of Quaker schooling in the New World. William Penn Charter School in East Falls and Center City's Friends Select School trace their roots to that seed. On Thursday night, the two K-12 institutions will join the other 80 Friends schools in 22 states to celebrate the 325th anniversary of Quaker education in America. And they're marking the milestone in a low-key, Quakerly way. The Friends Council on Education - the umbrella group for Quaker schools across the country - is hosting a gala at the historic Arch Street Meeting House in Old City with a night of reflection, music, and remarks by Jill Biden, the vice president's wife. "We don't take much time, being a Quaker institution, to stop and have big celebrations, because it's just not what we do," said Darryl J. Ford, who heads Penn Charter and chairs the council. "Quaker institutions are often understated and quietly reserved. I'm very pleased we will take this moment - just this moment - to stop and celebrate 325 years of Quaker education."
