Tuesday - May 6, 2014 From the School This Week' Query How can we be leaders without changing who we are? Notes from Sally Assembly: Reports about Minimester Let's help others get in the game! Have any old baseball gloves, bats, and helmets you don’t need anymore? Every year Major League Baseball organizes an equipment drive to provide baseball equipment to underprivileged kids who want to play baseball. This year the Washington Nationals are collecting equipment on May 18th, so bring in all of your old baseball equipment by then so we can have an equipment drive of our own! There are bins set up in the MS lobby for collection. Come help us say a fond farewell to Jennifer Mitchell, who has served as a Middle School science teacher, Middle School Assistant Principal, and All-School Diversity Coordinator. Join us for an informal reception on Friday afternoon, May 30thfrom 3:30 – 4:30 on the plaza between the Middle School and the Athletic Center. The Sidwell Friends Middle School Art Exhibit will begin on 12th of May and will run through the end of the school year. Please stop by to see our students' wonderful imagination, creativity and self expression as displayed in their art pieces! Special Guest Speaker: Representative John Lewis Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the RLS QMH: 7:15-7:30 refreshments; 7:30-8:30 remarks. Representative John Lewis is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th Congressional District, serving since 1987, and is the Dean of the Georgia Congressional Delegation. He is the only living "Big Six" leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. He was instrumental in the organization of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Congressman John Lewis chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. Please join the MS PA Diversity Committee in welcoming representative John Lewis to Sidwell Friends for his presentation about his life as a young activist, the importance of political engagement, and his conviction that today’s young people can transform a society. Students are welcome to attend. Send Good Wishes to Departing Faculty and Staff Sidwell Friends has benefitted from the many gifts and talents of our faculty and staff. Please digitally sign the card to send your best wishes to those who have served for more than 20 years or are members of the Administrative Council and are departing at the end of this school year. Thanks to the generosity of Middle School families who donated books and to the strong support of students, faculty and parents who bought so many used books, our Used Book Sale was a triumph. We raised $700 for An Open Book! Special thanks to Jenifer Panner and Ira Apfel for coordinating the event and the parents who helped staff the sale. “Founded by Dara La Porte and Heidi Powell, An Open Book Children’s Literacy Foundation was created to promote literacy among disadvantaged children and teens in the greater Washington, D.C. area by giving schools and students books and access to authors and illustrators. We excite children and teachers about reading and send every child home with a signed book. http://anopenbookfound.org/about-us/ PA Announcements MIddle School Casserole Bake The 3rd Annual Middle School Casserole Bake is ongoing until the afternoon of Wednesday, May 7th. It is not a tidy package of words which you can capture at any given time and then repeat weekly at a worship service. It is an experience of discovery which starts the discoverer on a journey which is life-long. The discovery in itself is not uniquely a property of Quakerism. It is as old as Christianity, and considerably older."
