** Norway Takes God Seriously

Friday, Oct. 12: Jørn Lemvik, Secretary General of Digni (the Norwegian umbrella organization that coordinates and recognizes faith-inspired development efforts), will reflect on the role of faith actors, especially Christian organizations, in the evolution of Norway's development work and strategy. Mr. Lemvik has been part of a recent rethinking of church-state relations prompted by an op-ed by Norway's development and environment minister titled 'Taking God Seriously,' which offers a new approach to engaging with religious actors in the highly secular Norway. ** The Yasuní-ITT Initiative as a New Model for Sustainable Development
------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, Oct. 12: Yasuní National Park, located in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest, is one of the most biologically megadiverse locations of the planet, as well as the home to two indigenous communities living in voluntary isolation. However, Yasuní also contains around 846 million barrels of crude oil, approximately 20 percent of the country’s proven oil reserves. The conference will showcase the innovative nature of the Yasuní-ITT Initiative as a model of sustainable development, coming from a developing country, that holistically links environmental conservation, social development and economic growth. ** 'Algeria at 50' Film Series: Outside the Law (Hors-La-Loi)

Wednesday, Oct. 17: Outside the Law (French: Hors-la-loi) is a 2010 drama film directed by Rachid Bouchareb, starring Jamel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem and Sami Bouajila. The story takes place between 1945 and 1962 and focuses on the lives of three Algerian brothers in France, set to the backdrop of the Algerian independence movement and the Algerian War. It is a standalone follow-up to Bouchareb's 2006 film Days of Glory, which was set during World War II. ** Painting Manuals and Artistic Originality in Ming China

Thursday, Oct. 18: Focusing on Huasou (Forest of Paintings), the first multi-genre painting manual published in China around 1579, Park’s presentation will illuminate how such publications accommodated the cultural tastes and aspirations of the general reading public in early modern China. This discussion of painting manuals will further demonstrate how their immediate popularity among the public caused a paradigm shift in the literati art world; thus, their production and consumption were intertwined with taste-making mechanisms shared by both middle-brow and elite art consumers in early modern China.
