** The Religious Situation in Germany and Europe Today

Friday, Oct. 26: The role of religion in European society and politics is undergoing far-reaching changes. The growth of Muslim minorities and the decline of established churches have generated greater religious pluralism at a time when the role of religion in the public sphere is increasingly contested. At this lunchtime seminar, Friedrich Wilhelm Graf, a leading German Protestant theologian based at the University of Munich, will discuss the contemporary religious situation in Germany and Europe and the challenges that lie ahead. ** Gendering Pathways to Political Power: Comparing the Careers of Helen Clark and Julia Gillard
------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, Oct. 29: Featuring Jennifer Curtin, Ph.D., the recipient of a New Zealand Fulbright Senior Scholar Award. The recent rise in the number of women presidents (and aspirants such as Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin) has sparked renewed interest in the representation of women at the highest level of politics. However, to date, few studies have systematically tracked how women make it to executive office, and even fewer include New Zealand and Australia in their analysis. This paper reviews the careers of two women leaders: Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand for nine years, and Julia Gillard, current Prime Minister of Australia, and identifies what it takes for a woman to break the highest of glass ceilings. ** Innovation Economics: The Race for Global Advantage Book Launch/Discussion

Tuesday, Oct. 30: This book, by Robert Atkinson and Stephen Ezell (F'96 and IBD'96), delivers a critical wake-up call: a fierce global race for innovation advantage is underway, and while other nations are making support for technology and innovation a central tenet of their economic strategies and policies, America lacks a robust innovation strategy. The reality is the United States is falling behind. Unless the U.S. enacts public policies to reflect this new reality, Americans will face relatively lower standards of living associated with a noncompetitive national economy. Ezell is a senior analyst at ITIF and lead's ITIF's work on science and technology, R&D, trade and manufacturing policy. The discussion will be moderated by Prof. Carl Dahlman, Henry R. ** Becoming Nonviolent Peacemakers
------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, Nov. 2: Why do many US residents, Catholics and Catholic leaders among them, too often fall short of adequately challenging the use of violence in US policy? Even when community organizers, policymakers, members of Catholic leadership, and academics sincerely search for alternatives to violence, they too often think about nonviolence as primarily a rule or strategy. Catholic Social Teaching has been moving toward transcending the limits of these approaches, but it still has significant room for growth. In order to contribute to this growth and to impact US policy, McCarthy draws on Jesus, Gandhi, Ghaffar Khan and King to offer a virtue-based approach to nonviolent peacemaking with a corresponding set of core practices. This approach is also set in conversation with aspects of human rights discourse to increase its possible impact on US policy.
