In communities throughout the Northwest, thousands of men, women, and children are
living on the margins. They face homelessness, domestic violence, hunger, and countless
other challenges that leave them struggling, feeling helpless, and oftentimes alone.
Jesuit Volunteers strive to change that.

Kelsey Alexander is a JV serving her second year in Portland, Oregon at Pathfinder
Academy, an alternative school in which pregnant and parenting youth can pursue
an education. Kelsey shares the story of how she helped change the life of one of
her clients, Gloriana.

Gloriana came to Pathfinder Academy at age 19, with a 5-month-old baby girl and
only a few high school credits under her belt. Years of gang involvement and run-ins
with the police had left her wondering what options she had.

But Gloriana and I worked diligently together. We had tutoring sessions to improve
her grades and began preparing her for the GED exam. Soon, Gloriana began to improve.
