Tuesday - April 22, 2014 From the School This Week's Query How can peer pressure help integrity? Notes from Sally This week’s assembly is the Middle School performance of Dear Edwina, which will be held at 9:30 on Friday morning. Parents are welcome to attend shows on Thursday or Friday morning or Friday evening or Saturday afternoon, which are the public shows. Founders Day is today! Students will be outside for a gathering, for lunch, and for activities from 10:15 – 1:00. Today at Founder’s Day, Mrs. Clarkson’s sixth grade class will hold a kiosk to raise awareness about Fashion Revolution Day. If you miss the kiosk, you can still participate on Thursday by wearing your clothes inside out. One year ago, on April 24th, 2013, the Rana Plaza Factory in Bangladesh collapsed and killed 1,133 people. This year, on April 24th, Fashion Revolution Day is a day to remember all the people who died in the Rana Plaza collapse as well as other factory disasters in the supply chain of our clothes. We will do this by raising awareness and being grateful toward the people who made our clothes. On April 24th, join Mrs. Clarkson’s sixth grade homeroom by wearing your shirt inside out to ask the question “Who made my clothes?” and post a picture of your tag and #insideout on www.theor.org/FRD. Be part of the revolution! Our thanks to Nicole Lang and the MS PA Diversity Committee for sponsoring the wonderful evening with Michele Norris last week. It was great to see a good crowd! Next up: Representative John Lewis on May 6th. You will find details for that evening elsewhere in the newsletter. We are beginning our series of spring Transition Meetings. Parents of all sixth grade students are encouraged to attend an information session about 7th grade on Wednesday evening, May 7th in the Middle School Drama Studio. Parents of newly enrolled students will also be there, and a light supper will be served before the meeting, beginning at 6:45. Please come meet the new parents in the grade. A meeting will be held for parents of new sixth grade students on May 15th, but that is intended only for new families, not for current 5th grade parents. We would like to have some current 5th grade families for the dinner that evening – look for an invitation from the Welcome Committee to join in. As we begin to add details to the calendar for the 2014-15 school year, I would welcome your suggestions for assembly performers or for speakers. Please send your ideas my way! Math Meet Success!! Congratulations to 7th graders Nathan Shapiro, OIiver Bass, Mitchell Jubeir, David Hacker, Arjun Sethi-Olowin and 8th grader Kevin Jiang, all of whom had perfect scores at the Math Meet held at Georgetown Day School for middle school students from 12 independents schools in the DC area. With these performances, Sidwell Friends achieved the maximum possible score and tied for first place. Congratulations to 6th graders Etan Basser, Ethan Isaacson, Alex Sundberg, and Ben Steel, 7th graders Arjun Sethi-Olowin, Mitchell Jubeir, Ariana Warden, Nathan Shapiro, and Stephen Forrester, and 8th graders Jack Blazes, Ella Stark, Isabel Kirsh, Sarah Broadnax, Billy Hefter, and Nate Freishtat, all of whom were among the top 30 scorers in the combined DC and Maryland region on the Maryland Math League contest that students took in February. Arjun tied for first in the entire DC Maryland region with a perfect score on the contest, and Etan tied for 2nd place in the entire region. Special Guest Speaker: Representative John Lewis Tuesday, May 6, 2014 in the RLS QMH: 7:15-7:30 refreshments; 7:30-8:30 remarks. Representative John Lewis is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 5th Congressional District, serving since 1987, and is the Dean of the Georgia Congressional Delegation. He is the only living "Big Six" leader of the American Civil Rights Movement. He was instrumental in the organization of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Congressman John Lewis chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), playing a key role in the struggle to end legalized racial discrimination and segregation. Please join the MS PA Diversity Committee in welcoming representative John Lewis to Sidwell Friends for his presentation about his life as a young activist, the importance of political engagement, and his conviction that today’s young people can transform a society. Students are welcome to attend. Events for Student Scholarships SFS TENNIS EVENT ON MAY 17 – REGISTER TODAY! Quaker Quotes "At a workcamp in Germany, surrounded by the ruins of war, I asked a French workcamper why he had come. His answer amazed me: 'To be among hopeful people!' But it was true. We were working together, and for others, in love; and we were experiencing the truth that faith, hope, and love do abide, but the greatest of these is love, because love creates hope!" David S Richie David Shoemaker Richie, born in 1908, led Quaker workcamps which were introduced in 1934 by the American Friends Service Committee and were 'intended predominantly as an educational instrument, the camp enabled young men and women of privileged groups to buy, with hard physical labor, their ticket into troubled communities where they could learn at first hand about the problems and the people concerned.' from Memories and Meditations of a Workcamper."
