Wednesday - April 23, 2014 From the School Message from Lee Classes on Memorial Day This year, because Memorial Day is now a regular school day due to the number of snow days this winter, all students are expected to attend classes on Monday, May 26th. However, we understand that some families may have made arrangements in advance under the assumption that there would not be school that day. In the event that your child must miss school on May 26th, we ask that you adhere to the following pre-excused absence procedure: “When students foresee the necessity of missing school for an important reason, parents or guardians are requires to state the reason by e-mail or written note at least one week in advance to the Dean of Students Office. If the Dean of Students approves, students will obtain a pre-excused slip with the Dean’s Signature. Students must then obtain the signatures of teachers (including physical education teachers) of all classes they will miss, acknowledging that the students have discussed with them a plan for making up missed work. Students must then hand in the completed form to the Dean of Students Office.” Any questions or concerns regarding Memorial Day attendance can be directed to the Dean of Students Office. Please feel free to call (202) 537-8160 or e-mail USAttendance@sidwell.edu. National Library Week Sidwell Friends Upper School Library celebrated National Library Week April 15th through April 19th. There were contests and prizes for students and senior bookmarks are now displayed. Highlight of the week was bestselling author of the book Liespotting and SFS alum Pamela Myer (’76) who spoke about detecting deception. Founder’s Day Yesterday was Founder's Day, a long SFS tradition when the whole school gathers for a celebration during the day on the Wisconsin campus. In the morning, the Upper School had a program organized in partnership with the Alumni Office - Let Your Life Speak Alumni. We are grateful to the alumni who both participated in small group sessions with students and who helped put together the program. Many thanks to all faculty and staff who also worked hard to support this inspiring event. The remainder of the day included All-School Meeting for Worship, lunch, fun outdoor activities for all grades, followed by the Upper School Senior Arts Guild. Collection Today Collection today is a presentation by the Eco-Club in honor of Earth Day. For Seniors Seniors will receive their packets for Commencement and enjoy time with their advisors in their final Class Meeting on Monday, April 28. Senior exams take place in regularly scheduled classes and run from Monday, April 28 through Friday, May 2. The final day of classes for seniors is Friday, May 2. AP exams and Senior Projects begin on Monday, May 5. From the Director of Special Events SFS Tennis Event on May 17: Register Today! His answer amazed me: 'To be among hopeful people!' But it was true. We were working together, and for others, in love; and we were experiencing the truth that faith, hope, and love do abide, but the greatest of these is love, because love creates hope!" David S Richie David Shoemaker Richie, born in 1908, led Quaker workcamps which were introduced in 1934 by the American Friends Service Committee and were 'intended predominantly as an educational instrument, the camp enabled young men and women of privileged groups to buy, with hard physical labor, their ticket into troubled communities where they could learn at first hand about the problems and the people concerned.' from Memories and Meditations of a Workcamper."
