** Lebanon in the Shadow of Syrian Civil War
------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, Nov. 16: The car bombing that killed Lebanese security chief Wissam al-Hasan last month has raised new concerns that Lebanon is being increasingly drawn into the Syrian civil war. Indeed, predictions that Lebanon would descend into sectarian violence as a result of the Syrian uprising have abounded since the beginning of that conflict. Yet, Lebanon—once a byword for religious civil war—has managed so far to avoid that catastrophic scenario. Irina Papkova, a Berkley Center research fellow now living in Beirut, will address the current political situation in Lebanon and the threats and challenges facing its leaders in the shadow of the Syrian conflict. ** Brazil Municipal Elections 2012

Monday, Nov. 19: In this presentation Dr. David Fleischer of the University of Brasilia discusses results of the 2012 municipal elections and assesses Brazil’s democracy today. He breaks down the data for the 5,568 municípios, the 26 state capitals, and the 83 cities with over 200,000 voters. The reelection of mayors and the number of women elected mayor or to city councils are examined. The 2012 results are compared with previous municipal elections (2008, 2004 and 2000) and the results by party are projected regarding the election of deputies in 2014. ** What Islam, Whose Islam: Women Demanding Equality & Justice
------------------------------------------------------------
Monday, Nov. 19: Featuring Zainah Anwar, Director, Musawah. Muslim women activists today are at the forefront in challenging the use of Islam to justify continued discrimination against women and violations of fundamental liberties. They are producing new feminist knowledge -- combining Islamic principles, human rights, constitutional guarantees of equality and non-discrimination and women's lived realities to break the constructed binary between Islam and human rights as well as the disconnect between law and reality. They are publicly challenging traditional religious authorities with alternative understandings of Islam in ways that take into consideration changing times and context. Anwar will share the experience of Sisters in Islam and the global movement it initiated, their work and challenges, and the resulting public contestations and hope for change.
