RE: A Message from Ross Harrison


Dear Folks,

It is with much sadness that I share with you a letter from Ross Harrison.
Ross has decided to step down from a full-time position with MSFS at the
end of this academic year to dedicate more time to his work in the field of
strategy. As you know, Ross has served with great enthusiasm and commitment
as Chair of the Concentration in International Commerce and Business since
2006. We are especially grateful for his leadership with our very
successful MSFS strategic planning process and his efforts to develop our
focus area in social enterprise. His good humor and wit have been a
constant source of energy for all of us (as well as his musical talents!).
We wish to thank Ross for his great commitment to MSFS and his years of
dedicated service. It is our hope that Ross will be able to remain on the
MSFS faculty and work with the program in a variety of new ways.

Please join me in wishing our friend and colleague much continued success
as he enters a new phase in his career! And a very special congratulations
to him on the launch of his new book, *Strategic Thinking in 3D: A Guide
for National Security, Foreign Policy, and Business Professionals*!

Dear Tony:


I am writing this to formally announce that I will be stepping down from my
position as chair of the International Commerce and Business concentration
at the end of the academic year 2012-13. As you and I have discussed, I am
doing this so that I can more fully pursue interests related to my work on
strategy, which will be kicked off with the launch of my forthcoming book
in May of 2013.


I have to say that I come to this decision with plenty of mixed emotion. On
the one hand I am excited about the prospects of new horizons. Since my
work on strategy has taken me beyond the realm of business, I look forward
to pushing off into some new directions. But my love for the MSFS program,
its mission, the faculty and staff, and the students, mean that I leave my
post at Georgetown with a heavy heart. I was first appointed to the faculty
at Georgetown in late 2004, and have had the privilege of serving as chair
of the concentration since late in 2006. My time at MSFS, first with Jim
Reardon-Anderson, then working with John Kline and then you, has been one
of the most fulfilling periods in my career. I am thankful I have had the
opportunity to serve in a program whose values and mission align so closely
with my own.


As we have discussed, my intent is to remain on the faculty as an adjunct
member and continue to teach my course on Strategy. If by some chance my
prospects of serving in a senior role in the next Obama administration
materialize, my ability to teach will be circumscribed until I leave
government service. But I promise you that whether in or out of government,
my commitment to MSFS and its students will remain steadfast.


I look forward very much to my last full-time semester at MSFS. I remain
committed to help ensure that the transition to a new concentration chair
be as smooth and seamless for the students as possible. Whether this coming
semester, or after I depart, please feel free to call on me for anything I
can do to help support you in this.


Thank you, Tony, for all of your support, and I hope you and Tracy have a
happy (and most importantly a healthy) holiday season. And I look forward
to working with you in 2013 and beyond.
