Friends, When we think of hate, most of us don't think of Iowa. We don't imagine that horrifying acts of terrorism and bigotry like we saw in Charlottesville this weekend could happen in our communities. And we certainly don't expect our neighbors to be marching through our streets with flaming torches, chanting slogans of hate. But just because we don't recognize it, hate doesn't cease to exist. In recent years, racist organizations have tried to gain a foothold in our state, announcing rallies and distributing recruitment flyers in small towns and at major universities. If Iowans -- from our members of Congress to ourselves -- fail to forcefully condemn the white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and terrorists who assembled in Charlottesville, we will grant them permission to spread their hate here. That's why I want to say this in the strongest possible terms: I will do all I can to ensure hate has no home and no haven in our state. As governor, I will defend the civil rights of every Iowan -- including the right to simply exist -- just as I have done as a legislator and a soldier. I urge every elected official in our state to do the same. Iowa's future depends on it.
