Happy Labor Day weekend, friend! I hope you’re enjoying this long holiday weekend to close out the summer with family, friends, and all around good people. For me, Labor Day weekend has always been about that, but it’s also a time when I’m reminded of where I come from. I grew up in a family of hard-working union members and public employees. My mom has worked for the Dubuque Public School System for more than 20 years, and my dad was a proud member of UA Local 601 as a pipefitter welder. My parents were able to make a good life for me and my siblings because of what so many Brothers and Sisters in Labor did before them -- by fighting for workers to be treated fairly and with dignity. I couldn't be more proud to be from a union family, and it’s why I’ve always been willing to continue on the fight for working men and women -- for my Brothers and Sisters. And I’m honored that labor groups representing more than 50,000 Iowa union members are supporting my run for Congress. Last spring, when Iowa’s public employees and unions were under attack by Republicans in the State House, I spoke up and fought for them. I asked my colleagues to look these people who were my friends, my neighbors, and my family in the eyes and tell them why their work was worth less than anyone else's. That battle was lost, but the fight for making sure all Iowa workers are treated with respect, earn a fair wage, have opportunities for advancement through training programs, and get the benefits they’ve worked hard for will continue on. And I’ll always be in the fight for those principles. So this Labor Day, while taking time to enjoy the end of the summer, I hope you’ll also take time to remember what this holiday is about, and remind yourself that the fight for working families isn’t over. I’ll be in the fight with my Brothers and Sisters, my family, my friends, and my neighbors for as long as it takes. I hope you will too.
