Pardoning Arpaio is a slap in the face

Dear Robert,

Just two weeks from the tragedy of Charlottesville and Trump’s disgraceful responses, he has now pardoned Sheriff Joe Arpaio for his refusal to stop racial profiling even after a court order to do so.

This is a slap in the face to all of us who care about equality, civil rights, and the rule of law.

The pardon also has potential consequences for all of us:

As reported in the NYTimes, "Should the president indicate that he does not think Mr. Arpaio should be punished for that, he would signal that governmental agents who violate judicial injunctions are likely to be pardoned, even though their behavior violated constitutional rights, when their illegal actions are consistent with presidential policies.”

In short, this pardon could signal it’s ok to violate constitutional rights if it agrees with Trump’s philosophy, because you’ll be pardoned.

It should also not be lost on Americans that Joe Arpaio once arrested journalists for covering him. Given Trump’s predilection for accusing the “Fake” media of being against American interests, this should be a huge red flag. Note: this stunt cost taxpayers millions in a settlement with the journalists:

Trump doesn’t care what we think, but every Republican in the House of Delegates and beyond that doesn’t flat out reject Trump should be held accountable.
