Dear Hunter,

While much of the world may be on vacation, I’m just back and couldn’t help but reminisce about what I was doing and thinking this very day 43 years ago. The notion that I can reflect back on such a long time span I guess is a sure sign of getting older!

I like to tell my youngest daughter Nikki, as tumultuous as the times may seem today, 43 years ago they were at least as tumultuous….and I frankly think considerably more so. In 1974 a senseless war was raging in Southeast Asia claiming tens of thousands of lives and spawning massive social unrest across the US. The fight for civil rights was in full swing, tense American cities were still recovering from the urban riots of a few years earlier, and an experienced but increasingly unpopular US president was trying to hang on to power after being exposed for obstructing justice. Despite these formidable challenges, the US came through it all, bruised but determined to restore its sense of purpose and principle.

Most days I find myself shaking my head in disbelief by what I hear, read, and see going on in public discourse. But when I think back about those dark days of my youth and how it all turned out, I force myself to be optimistic about the future.

I share these thoughts with you hoping that you, too, can see through the fog and envision brighter days ahead. As always, I’d welcome your thoughts.
