This Saturday, white supremacists, the KKK, and Nazis marched into Charlottesville preaching hate and inciting violence. While we know Washington state as a place that welcomes all, it pained us to learn that one person who marched was the president of Washington State University’s College Republicans.

The very next day, white supremacists and fascists gathered at Westlake Center in Seattle under the false pretense of patriotism. This hateful ideology continues to grow, threatening everything we believe as Americans and Washingtonians.

We can’t let hate have a home in our state. We need to make Washington a beacon of hope to those throughout our nation who feel threatened by white supremacy. The president and his advisors may not believe in the poem on the Statue of Liberty, they may not believe that we are all created equal, but in Washington we know it to be true, above all else. Here, we will take in the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, from Syria to Charlottesville.
